Veterans will see same cost-of-living boost in 2021 as Social Security beneficiaries

“Our men and women in uniform deserve to have Washington in their corner working tirelessly to ensure they can keep up with the rising costs of housing, utilities, and food when they return to civilian life,” Tester said. “Today’s passage is a clear sign that we’re making good on our promises to those who’ve served.”

The Pentagon is eyeing a 500-ship Navy, documents reveal

The Pentagon’s upcoming recommendation for a future U.S. Navy is expected to call for a significant increase in the number of ships, with officials discussing a #fleet as large as 530 hulls, according to documents obtained by Defense News.

Two groups commissioned by Secretary of Defense Mark Esper to design what a future #Navy should look like suggested fleets of anywhere from 480 to 534 ships, when manned and unmanned platforms are accounted for — at least a 35 percent increase in fleet size from the current target of 355 manned ships by 2030.

The Pentagon is weighing a dramatically different fleet that relies heavily on unmanned ships and submarines.

Military Retirees and Families Are Getting an Extension on ID Card Renewals

Military dependents and retirees now have through the end of June 2021 to access benefits using ID cards that expired this year, thanks to an extension of temporary ID card rules issued in response to the #COVID-19 pandemic.

Typically, cards must be applied for, issued and updated in person up to 30 days before the expiration date at one of the more than 1,600 ID card offices on #military facilities worldwide. Cards that do not expire, such as those held by retirees over 65, do not need to be renewed.

Coast Guard crew saves ship from fire while underway in 7th Fleet

The crew of the Waesche, a national security cutter, battled heroically to save their ship after a fire broke out while it was underway in U.S. 7th Fleet Sunday.

Five U.S. Coast Guard members sustained minor injuries, but the crew was able to get the blaze under control in about 90 minutes and the stricken 418-foot-long cutter arrived at the #Navy’s Fleet Forces Yokosuka, Japan, facility Tuesday, according to a #CoastGuard statement.

Lawmakers question VA approach on burn pits, advance bill to help military toxic exposure victims

On Wednesday, the Senate legislation — sponsored by Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., and backed by a coalition of veterans advocates — was approved by the chamber’s Veterans' Affairs committee and could be taken up by the full Senate in coming weeks.

It would establish an independent “Toxic Exposure Review Commission,” charged with identifying and investigating allegations from #troops and #veterans, as well as broaden testing and presumptive benefits status for some related conditions.

“There’s major anxiety already, because of what we’re seeing in communities,” said Kathryn Monet, CEO of the National Coalition for Homeless #Veterans. "We’re seeing increases in unemployment, eviction moratoriums not being honored.

Military #servicemembers and #veterans have seen major changes to their pay and benefits over the past year. A new retirement benefit, revised rules for TRICARE health insurance and changes to #GIBill rules can have a far-reaching impact on the lives and livelihoods of #military #families around the world.

For the most part, it’s good news. Basic pay is once again rising at the same rate as private-sector wages after several years of tight Pentagon budgets resulted in service members losing some ground compared to their civilian counterparts. The new #retirement benefit, which includes cash contributions to a Thrift Savings Account, is a major boost for the vast majority of the force that serves for six or eight or ten years but never reaches the 20-year mark to become eligible for a lifelong pension.

Divers may have found US Navy submarine Grenadier lost in WWII

The 1,475-ton, 307-foot long Grenadier was scuttled by its crew after bombs from a Japanese plane almost sent them to a watery grave. All 76 of its personnel survived the bombing and sinking, but their agony to follow would be prolonged. After being taken prisoner, they were tortured, beaten and nearly starved by their Japanese captors for more than two years, and four did not survive that ordeal. Navy Times

The VA Has Changed to Better Serve Post-9/11 Veterans, Wilkie Says

"[Post-9/11 veterans] come from a faster-moving society. They are technically savvy. They don't come from a culture where people were very happy to sit in a big room and talk to other folks and not be rushed because that was their way of doing business. These folks want answers fast. And they want care faster, and that's as much psychological as it is as it is practical," he said.

To meet their needs, the VA has worked toward introducing its electronic health record, intended to improve medical care and tracking; provide faster service for scheduling appointments and filling prescriptions; and allow for coordination between a #veteran's medical team, including the VA, Defense Department and private-sector physicians.
