Norwegian Christmas at Union Station 2019

In one of Washington’s most popular holiday traditions, which began in 1997, Norway will present a Christmas tree to the people of Washington, D.C., in recognition of the strong friendship between Norway and the United States, and in gratitude for America’s assistance during and after World War II. The theme for this year’s tree is the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. These goals address the challenges we face as a global community and the 2030 target for achieving them. Specially designed ornaments and signage will represent the goals.

This beloved holiday event, which attracted 5,000 guests in 2018, is presented free to the public and will feature performances by The String Queens, whose members have collaborated with artists such as Ledisi, Janelle Monáe, and Common, and the Washington Performing Arts Children of the Gospel Choir.

We’re counting down until Norwegian Christmas at Union Station with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Goal 3: Good health and well-being.

Today, there’s a 31 year gap between the countries with the shortest and longest life expectancy. More than 1.6 billion people in the world live in fragile settings where weak national capacity to deliver basic health services present a significant challenge to global health.

After initiative from Norway, Ghana and Germany, the WHO launched a global plan this year to advance the collective action on global health.

The plan brings together 12 multilateral health, development and humanitarian agencies to support countries' progress towards SDG Goal #3: https://www.who.int/sdg/global-action-plan

We’re counting down 17 days until Norwegian Christmas at Union Station with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Goal 2: Zero Hunger. Over 820 million people in the world are undernourished today and one in five children under five are malnourished.

This year, Norway launched an action plan on sustainable food systems, to increase sustainable food production, improve nutrition, enhance job and value creation and promote capacity building and good governance.

The action plan is unique, in the sense that Norway is one of the first countries in the world to have prepared a plan on sustainable food systems in the context of its foreign and development policy.
