NAMI

NENA applauds the US House for passing a bill to implement 988 as the nationwide short code for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. For more than 50 years, the nation has benefited enormously from universal, simple access to emergency response; suicide-related emergencies are common and will now receive more specialized support.

Yesterday, Congress took a huge step forward passing the National Suicide Hotline Designation Act, putting the country on track to make #988 fully operational.

PLEASE NOTE: #988 is not yet up and running. Experiencing a crisis? Please call 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or text “NAMI” to 741741."

Fee diversion continues to damage 9-1-1’s reputation and puts lives at risk. We appreciate the Federal Communications Commission's willingness to tackle this challenging issue, and look forward to contributing our perspective to the proceeding.

The FCC today launched a proceeding to examine ways to combat 911 fee diversion— the practice by some states and other jurisdictions of using the 911 fees that consumers pay on their phone bills for non-911 purposes. For more info, visit: https://go.usa.gov/xGG3e #NG911 #FCCGov

Due to Covid-19 many Communications Centers decided to postpone celebrating 9-1-1 Telecommunications Week back in April. I have an idea, let's make the opening of this new ABC Emergency Call seires date 9/28 National 9-1-1 Emergency Communications Officers Day. As a way to demomstrate our impact on the response to every 9-1-1 call, we should post our Accommendations, that we've earned throughout our careers or a special Save call that may have gone unrecognized. Please share this with all of the local chapters
Hi everyone! Has anyone taken the ENP remotely?
As a past telecommunicator and current OnStar representative, I want to thank you all. National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week (NPSTW), April 12–18, serves as a reminder to recognize those who are essential to keeping communities safe and the lines of communications open. OnStar salutes the public safety telecommunications professionals who dedicate themselves to being the “first” First Responders in our communities. Especially during these challenging times, OnStar honors — and encourages others to honor — these “heroes under the headsets” for their important work. OnStar would like to express our sincere appreciation for the ongoing sacrifices and heroic efforts of all first responder and healthcare professionals as you continue to serve your communities despite the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic. You do what you do despite the personal risk, and that selfless commitment is going to see us through this. Many of you are faced with immense pressure and stress, been exposed to the virus or even lost someone close to you. We continued to keep you, your families and agencies in our thoughts during this difficult time. Thank you for your continued support, service and commitment. Be safe out there.
Reminder... Voting for NENA Board of Directors deadline is tomorrow, April 15 at 5PM EST . If you didn't get your ballot, make sure you get reach out to Bri Robinson. Remember, this is your organization so please take a minute and vote. Read about your candidates and make the best choice for you.
Just wanted to share this 911 Tribute video that we just completed. Feel free to share it on your work or personal page. Thanks to all of the agencies that participated. Nappy NTW 2020.

History…..09-10-2019 There are many antidotes to 9-11 that are recalled on this somber anniversary. However, one that is not well known and seldom heard is this; In 1987, the United States Congress passed, and President Ronald Reagan signed Public Law 99-445, designating September 11th of each year as “9-1-1 Emergency Number Day”. Its’ purpose was, to celebrate the life-saving importance of 9-1-1 to every person in America. In 2001, there was an event planned on the grounds of the US Capitol Building, at which the National Emergency Number Association (NENA), was to present to the Congress, a report detailing the State of 9-1-1 in America, three decades after it was implemented in 1968, in the small town of Haleyville, Alabama…..and to plan for the Next Generation of 9-1-1. The invitations had been sent, the weather was perfect, the tent was erected, rows of chairs were aligned, the podium microphone and speakers were tested - waiting only for the guests to arrive at 1000. Then, beginning at 0846 in New York City and again at 0903, followed then at 0937 at the Pentagon, and lastly at 1007 in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania….the world as we knew it changed in 81 minutes, and America would never be the same. Suffice to say, the 9-1-1 event did not occur on 09-11-01 or ever again. Another non-human casualty of 9-11…..Never Forget
