The annual Historic Alexandria Holiday Ornament has arrived! This year highlights the Friendship Firehouse Museum Hose-Reel Carriage. Friendship Fire Company purchased the hose-reel carriage in 1858 from coachmaker and Friendship member Robert F. Prettyman. The hose carriage is currently receiving professional conservation. After a meticulous paint analysis and examination, it will be restored to its original ornate paint scheme of blue with gold embellishments. This ornament is $20 and can be purchased online or at the open Historic Alexandria Museum Shops: https://shop.alexandriava.gov/Products/FriendshipFirehouseHoseReelOrnament(2020).aspx?skuid=6005838 #HistoricALX2U

Yesterday, on Friday June 5th, the Friendship Veterans Fire Engine Association wrapped up their six weeks of feeding the local firefighters. Each week, through sponsors, we fed approximately 90 firefighters. We thank them so much for their services, and being out there on the front line. We also want to thank Foster’s Grille for their support.

Several weeks ago the Friendship Veterans Fire Engine Association launched an initiative to “Feed Our Firefighters” to show our appreciation for the men and women of the Alexandria Fire Department who risk their lives every day serving our community. We partner with local restaurants and fund the cost of the meals they deliver; helping to keep them in business and our firefighters out of public grocery stores. It was a small gesture but it caught on. Initially, a few of our Trustees stepped up to sponsor, and soon members of a homeowner’s association and a prominent club joined in. To date, we have fed three shifts with two more scheduled and more to come after that, as additional folks join the cause. You are invited to be part of the effort by asking your followers to spread the word and by making a donation in any amount via https://www.friendshipfireco.org/.

Looking at photographs over time can tell historians what changes occurred in a community. While they usually search through archives and research files for photos, you can conduct research from home with Google Street View! Focusing on Friendship Firehouse as our research topic, use the activity sheet to “tour” the streetscape around the museum over time. How many changes can you find? Can you guess when they were made? https://www.alexandriava.gov/114283 #TourTuesday #HistoricALX2U #MuseumFromHome

#TourTuesday It’s Global Volunteer Month! In 1774 the Friendship Fire Company became the first of five volunteer firefighting companies established in Alexandria. Every household responded to fires with their own leather fire bucket to form bucket brigades, buying time for firefighters to gather equipment. Tour through the Google 360 view – can you find the leather fire buckets and the two places in the museum that have clasped hands, the symbol of Friendship?

Thank you all for your generous support of the Freedom House Preservation Fund - we raised $12,813 plus an additional $850 in prizes, making our #Spring2ACTion grand total $13,663! Though we may be physically distanced right now, we are as committed as ever to interpreting the complex and important history of this site. We are working hard to make the space more accessible to all, research the stories of the enslaved people who passed through this building, and serve the community in new and meaningful ways. #ThankYou

#Spring2ACTion Freedom House is critical as our community grapples with the City’s complex history and role in the domestic slave trade. Lillian Stanton Patterson is historian of the Shiloh Baptist Church, a congregation founded 157 years ago by formerly enslaved people at this site. She highlights its significance: “The importance of Black history to the fabric of Alexandria cannot be overstated... This purchase is a big plus for the entire community!!” Join us as we establish a Preservation Fund to restore our first and more important object – the building – to interpret this painful past: https://bit.ly/3c6P9O5

On August 30th, the Fire Department, City of Alexandria, VA and Friendship Fire Company honored Chief George Petty with a memorial headstone after years of lying in an unmarked grave. Our Local History/Special Collections branch recently uncovered photos in the McKenney-Mills Collection, of Chief Petty's 1911 Funeral Procession at the 300 block of Prince Street. The No. 4 Columbia Co. marches in the grey uniforms, while the DC Fire And EMS marches in dark uniforms. Rest well, Chief.
