REMEMBRANCE :: On this day 121 years ago, a mob abducted Benjamin Thomas, an African American teenager, from the Alexandria jail, dragged him several blocks, and lynched him at the corner of King and South Fairfax. This morning, Mayor Justin Wilson and Sheriff Dana Lawhorne placed a wreath at that corner to honor his life. We thank the Alexandria Community Remembrance Project, its research committee members and Historic Alexandria staff for their commitment to documenting and exposing such injustices so we may come together in the healing process. Please visit the remembrance page for Benjamin Thomas to learn more and read statements from Mayor Wilson, Sheriff Lawhorne and others. https://www.alexandriava.gov/historic/blackhistory/default.aspx?id=116918

WHERE WE STAND :: Following the murder of George Floyd, Sheriff Dana Lawhorne convened a group of community stakeholders to discuss the use of force and other important topics. Sheriff Lawhorne asked members of this group, which includes representatives from the faith community, NAACP, and Correctional Services Advisory Board, to review how our policies and practices compare to the “8 Can’t Wait” initiative. Although we were already in compliance with most recommendations, we made some adjustments to our practices to align them with “8 Can’t Wait” recommendations. An overview of our use of force policy is available on our website.https://www.alexandriava.gov/uploadedFiles/Sheriff/info/ASOUseOfForceOverviewJuly2020.pdf

#FactCheckFriday Although dates of emancipation vary from state to state, June 19th has come to be celebrated throughout the United States as a day to commemorate the end of slavery. Why this date? In 1865, General Granger announced that the enslaved people in Texas were free. Texans began celebrating Juneteenth in 1866; Alexandrians have celebrated since 1889 on different days of the year and in different months. Celebrate this important date by immersing yourself in local African American history online: https://www.alexandriava.gov/114283 #HistoricALX2U

To hell with this smarmy judge who let a man free so he could kill the woman who he stalked. Shameful.
Sean, did you forget, coloring is for seniors, too.
My puppy is missing. His name is Cam. He was with me in the car last night, Saturday April 11 when I took the trash out. I went to 7-eleven on Edsall and Van Dorn after. There was a man asking for money outside and two other men came up. One went inside and the other stayed outside. When I came out, Cam was no longer in the car. I thought I locked my car but I must not have. This was about 10:30pm. Please help me find him. He’s a ShihTzu. He’s about 9 lbs and 1 year old. PLEASE SHARE. Thanks for your help.
Edison High School criminal justice classes loved having guest speaker Deputy Hurtado! Huge thanks to the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office for supporting our program. #edisonacademy
The terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 left 343 New York firefighters dead. Retired FDNY Lieutenant James J. O’Donnell survived that horrific day but attended over 150 memorial services for those that passed. Now, he shares the lives of 10 heroes who perished in the attacks, as told by their parents in “Sons of Valor, Parents of Faith.” “The crashing of two planes into the Twin Towers not only dismantled the buildings but hundreds of families as well. Mothers and fathers were left in the rubble of these attacks, searching for husbands, brothers and sons. Some of them never received answers nor recovered the bodies,” O’Donnell said. “The parents’ spiritual and emotional journeys can serve as an example of faith rising over despair.” “Sons of Valor, Parents of Faith” serves as a memorial to the lives and careers of 10 first responders who perished on 9/11. O’Donnell presents a unique and personal look at how the parents of these heroes were consoled by the FDNY Counseling Services Unit and the role that they played in helping them manage their grief in the aftermath of a national tragedy. In their own words, these faithful families share their sons' bravery and sacrifice so that it will never be forgotten. These parents not only recount the lives of their children but their own road to healing. O’Donnell takes a special look at the role faith played in the lives of those that perished and their families. “Sons of Valor, Parents of Faith is meant to help readers understand the stress, hardship and sometimes devastation that parents and families of first responders face,” O’Donnell said. “I also hope that readers realize the efforts and sacrifices of the FDNY and their families. Not only on that day but in the ensuing months and years.” Available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Westbow Press.
