We are here today because of individuals who wanted to help those in need within their church and home community.
In the early 1960's, members of a local Springfield church "put feet to their prayers" by collecting food for Christmas food baskets for individuals within their church or home community. During it's earliest years, Koinonia gave clothing and a limited supply of non-perishable food. Volunteers coordinated home-cooked meals, provided referrals to local churches for employment, offered local transportation assistance, and offered various programs designed to meet the needs of the community.
The Koinonia Foundation became Incorporated in January, 1966 by the Commonwealth of Virginia, State Corporate Commission. In 1970, The Department of the Treasury, Internal Revenue Service determined that The Koinonia Foundation, Inc. was exempt under the Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
Today, Koinonia provides over 2,000 client consultations annually. We provide on-going services to meet the emergency needs of our community, as well as annual programs designed to reach beyond emergency help.
