TRALA applauds Senator Ashley Moody for introducing the Staged Accident Fraud Prevention Act, legislation that would make intentionally staging an accident involving a commercial motor vehicle a federal crime.

Staged crashes are not victimless crimes—they endanger lives, disrupt supply chains, fuel lawsuit abuse, and drive up insurance costs for trucking companies, truck renting and leasing businesses, and consumers alike.

TRALA is proud to support this commonsense legislation and thanks Senator Moody, Congressman Mike Collins, and Congressman Brandon Gill for their leadership in protecting professional drivers, improving highway safety, and holding criminal fraud rings accountable. TRALA supports the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee's efforts to support the nation's industry and infrastructure with the . TRALA also thanks committee members for their support during bill markup for an amendment to protect the truck renting and leasing industry: “TRALA wants to thank Congressman Bresnahan for his leadership and support for the amendment during markup last week that would ban lawsuits against leasing and renting companies that do not add optional equipment that is not required by state or federal law,” said Jake Jacoby, President and CEO of TRALA. “Allowing lessors to compete in the marketplace without fear from frivolous charges that do not advance safety is critical to ensuring our members continue to lease and rent the trucks that literally move America. TRALA shares Congressman Bresnahan’s support of small businesses, as they represent more than 95% of our members’ customers. Having a highway reauthorization bill with adequate funding for infrastructure as well as guardrails against inflationary issues will allow our economy to expand and businesses of all sizes to grow and prosper.”

Big win in the fight against organized cargo theft:

The House has passed the Combating Organized Retail Crime Act (CORCA) with strong bipartisan support - an important step toward protecting the trucking industry, supply chains, and communities nationwide.

Now it’s time for the Senate to act.
TRALA urges swift passage, because safety, security, and economic stability can’t wait.

A strong outcome for the rental industry.

The New York Court of Appeals ruled in Second Child v. Edge Auto, Inc., confirming that rental companies are not required to provide primary insurance coverage beyond state minimums.

TRALA and the The American Car Rental Association supported the case through a joint amicus brief. The decision reinforces the role of the Graves Amendment and provides helpful clarity on how federal and state laws apply to rental vehicle liability.
