ADL - Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative

ADL - Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative The Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Initiative improves learning and training through innovative research and technology. The Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Initiative focuses on innovating the way we learn and train individuals in the military, industry and academia.

ADL conducts research and development efforts that are focused on principled learning sciences and technologies. It provides technical implementation guidance and develops open-source/government-owned standards and software. The ADL community is comprised of government, individuals, organizations, international partners, and industry providers/team members - all focused on innovating learning. ADL, through a series of Broad Agency Announcements, offers opportunities for industry to participate in the innovation process and to design compelling and effective learning tools and technologies. Through its international partnerships, ADL facilitates global collaborations in targeted research areas. To become a partner, or learn about research topics, please visit the ADL website: http://adlnet.gov/

Enterprise Course Catalog: Pre-Alpha Prototype Final Report

The 21st century is marked by significant technological progress in every field. For learning and development, these advancements have helped us realize the promise of “anytime, anywhere” learning as well as learning personalized to individual needs. More than that, emerging capabilities have thrown open the door to transformative possibilities, facilitating learning at scale, optimizing learning in response to large and diverse data sets, and developing fully integrated talent management systems for managing and enhancing the future workforce.

“In addition to using data to personalize our learning, we can also use that data to help inform workforce decisions like helping us remediate capability gaps early or matching people with the right competencies to do the right tasks for them.” - The Honorable Lisa Hershman, Chief Management Officer, Department of Defense. #ADLiFEST

“I always like to think about that learning ecosystem concept: learning is all around you in all different forms. So, it could be an online course, it could be a face-to-face course, it could be virtual reality or simulation or anything, but it's all customized to you. It follows you in your continuum. That seems very futuristic, but I think it’s actually available for us really soon if we just put the systems in place." - Sae Schatz, Ph.D., discussing the concept of a Learning Ecosystem at iFEST with Hon. Lisa Hershman.

Lifelong learning is something driven by the learner, not by anyone else. We can take BG Lejiņš advice to high schoolers and apply it to learners of all ages:

“Lifelong learning requires buy-in from the individual. My advice to young people when they go from high school to university is that the real challenge is that you’re not studying for teachers anymore, you’re studying for yourself.” - BG Ilmārs Lejiņš, ACOS Joint Force Development, NATO ACT

“While DoD's modernization efforts have definitely improved, challenges still remain regarding acquisition management and leveraging DoD's federated business enterprise architecture. EDLM is addressing these challenges with a plan for modernization of our education and training system. [...] EDLM is transforming how DoD provides education and training to its workforce. This is an important culture shift in how we do business.” - Hon. Lisa Hershman, Chief Management Officer, Department of Defense. #ADLiFEST #DoD
