ADL - Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative

ADL - Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative The Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Initiative improves learning and training through innovative research and technology.

The Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Initiative focuses on innovating the way we learn and train individuals in the military, industry and academia. ADL conducts research and development efforts that are focused on principled learning sciences and technologies. It provides technical implementation guidance and develops open-source/government-owned standards and software. The ADL community is comprised of government, individuals, organizations, international partners, and industry providers/team members - all focused on innovating learning. ADL, through a series of Broad Agency Announcements, offers opportunities for industry to participate in the innovation process and to design compelling and effective learning tools and technologies. Through its international partnerships, ADL facilitates global collaborations in targeted research areas. To become a partner, or learn about research topics, please visit the ADL website: http://adlnet.gov/

Science of Learning (SOLAR)

The ADL Initiative has released three new ‘Science of Learning' reports. These reports aim to highlight the “art of the possible” for high-quality distributed learning in the Department of Defense (DoD). The State-of-the-Art Report presents a summary of state-of-the-art practices of relevant research on technology, institutional support, and human learning. The Exemplar Report provides examples of how a learning organization can scale up its training and education to meet the needs of its learners. The DoD Recommendation Report integrates the findings of the two previous reports into a series of recommendations at the institution and course creation level.

These reports are available at https://buff.ly/2XQtbKE and will also be available via DoD’s Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) after 14-Aug-20.

The SOLAR project integrates best practices from industry and adult education into DoD distributed learning organizations

Extended Reality (XR) is an umbrella term that encompasses all of Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR). VR is a completely immersive and generated world while AR places a technology layer over the existing one. MR is a combination of the two. Regardless of the technology, the purpose is to provide an interactive world to the learner that could not otherwise exist. https://buff.ly/39Xb4HS

A learning ecosystem is the conglomerate of all available resources to a learner as a part of the role they play in that environment. This includes technology but is not limited to technology. Through the Total Learning Architecture, ADL is transforming the paradigm of a single commercial system to a suite of services that are driven by specifications and standards. Come chat with us about Learning Ecosystem Transformation at #ADLiFEST!

Competencies define what is required to successfully do a job in an operational environment like the workplace. In the context of learning, competencies are often associated with learning objectives or outcomes. Credentials are awarded by an organization based on the satisfaction of multiple competencies within the corresponding framework.
