Good morning, Jim Wells County!

I have one more important message for you this morning.

What started as an online challenge and hoax has now gone viral, and unfortunately, it is causing fear and concern among families and communities. I am talking about the “Cat in the Hat” online trend that is circulating on social media. This kind of behavior and threats will not be tolerated.

Parents, please take a moment to talk with your children about what they are seeing and sharing online. Some of this content is fake or AI-generated, but that does not mean threatening posts or messages should be treated as a joke. When a post names a school, student, or community or makes a threat, we take it seriously and investigate it. Apparently this trend started several days ago on social media.

Please remind your children that online pranks, threats or false reports can have very real consequences. What someone may think is “just a joke” can create fear throughout an entire community and can potentially lead to serious legal consequences.

Our schools and law enforcement partners are aware of the situation and are continuing to monitor information as it comes in. We will continue working with our local schools and keeping parents informed as investigations develop.

If your child sees something online that appears threatening or makes them feel unsafe, please don’t share it further or try to investigate it yourself. Save the information and report it to a parent, school official, or law enforcement.

Most importantly, let’s remind our children that what happens online can have very real consequences in the real world.

Thank you for your cooperation, your vigilance, and for helping us keep our children and our community safe.

A new fear has been unlocked — and it's wearing a top hat. Police have since issued a statement after some TikTok users became concerned a life-sized version of The Cat in the Hat was stalking the streets in the UK and Ireland.

County lines and agency names matter administratively—but emergencies do not always respect those boundaries. Major incidents may require cooperation among law enforcement agencies, fire departments, emergency medical services, schools, hospitals, and other community partners.

No single agency has every resource or every answer. Strong working relationships built before an emergency help everyone respond more effectively when the pressure is on. Cooperation is not about who receives credit. It is about making sure the job gets done and the public is protected.

Law enforcement service does not affect only the person wearing the uniform. It affects the family waiting through late calls, missed meals, overnight shifts, holidays, and unexpected schedule changes.

Spouses, parents, and other loved ones often carry responsibilities at home while their family member is serving the county. They may not wear the badge but they share part of the sacrifice.

Today, I want to thank the families who support our employees and make their service possible.

Patrol vehicles, safety equipment, radios, computers, uniforms, and facilities are purchased or maintained with public funds.

That means we have a responsibility to take care of them.

Equipment must be inspected, maintained, repaired, and replaced responsibly. Neglecting small problems usually makes them more expensive later.

Good stewardship is not glamorous. Every dollar should be treated as if it came directly from a hardworking taxpayer—because it did.

Some of the best work in law enforcement never receives public attention.

It is the deputy who takes extra time to explain something to a family.

The jailer who notices that an inmate is struggling.

The employee who catches an error before it becomes a larger problem.

Professionalism is often quiet.

It is doing the right thing when no camera is present, no recognition is expected, and no one outside the office may ever know.

That kind of service matters, and it deserves to be recognized.
