Mark was a leader in our community and a chamber champion who had a true servant’s heart and passion for helping others succeed. Mark served as a Board Member since 2019. He also served the Chamber as an ambassador from 2016 through 2020 and continued this work as a board liaison for the committee. Outside of the chamber he was a podcast producer and owner of FriedoNation Productions, he spent his free time volunteering with the Special Olympics, and was an avid sports fan. Above all, Mark was a friend to all, and we will miss him dearly.

How to Survive A Government Shutdown: A Small Business Guide

In a new blog post, U.S. Chamber Vice President, Small Business Policy Tom Sullivan provides insights about the potential shutdown, helping our members—especially our small businesses—get ready.

Check out these tips: Now is the moment to get ready for a potential shutdown, and these insights offer guidance on what to watch for and actions you can take:

Federal contractors: Prime contractors should review their contracts for work stoppage clauses, as the government can’t make contract changes during a shutdown; typically, work continues unless the contract is terminated or placed on stop-work status.

Federal Employee Pay: In a government shutdown, essential services continue, but over four million military and civilian federal employees don't get paid until after reopening, leading to financial strain and reduced spending in affected communities.

Lending: Financial markets stay open, but Small Business Administration (SBA) loan processing may lag. If you have an SBA loan, contact your lender to understand how the shutdown affects it, and while SBA disaster loans are likely to continue, expect delays with new Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDLs).

Air travel: When traveling via commercial flight, monitor your flight status closely for potential delays and changes due to reduced federal staffing in air traffic control. Plan to arrive at the airport early as Transportation Security Administration ( TSA) staffing is also expected to be limited.

Dive Deeper: Click here to read the full survival guide.

Are you a small biz with a story? If you are willing to share how a government shutdown impacts your small business, please share your experience with [email protected].

Interesting op-ed on government shutdown!

Since 1995, there have been five government shutdowns, instigated by Republicans and Democrats. They all failed, and hurt Americans in the process.

Thank you, Mayor Baine Brooks - Allen, TX

Mayor Baine Brooks is sharing a message with the Allen community after anti-Semitic fliers were placed on cars parked in a local shopping center.

The fliers were reported to Allen Police Department on Saturday. Officers collected all the fliers they could find and notified the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Anti-Defamation League (ADL) for situational awareness. No suspects have been identified.

ā€œIt is deeply unsettling to think about these messages being distributed in our community,ā€ said Mayor Baine Brooks. ā€œI'm proud to represent a city that welcomes diversity and embodies deep respect for one another's religion, race and creed. Whoever distributed these horrible fliers needs to get one thing clear: Hatred has no place in Allen."

Placing fliers on cars is a violation of the City of Allen’s solicitation ordinance. Anyone with additional information or video footage connected to this incident should contact Allen Police Department's crime tip line at 2144.509.4278. Individuals can also text a crime tip to 847411; in the message field, type ALLENPD followed by the tip information and hit send.

TEXAS CONFERENCE FOR EMPLOYERS
September 29, 2023
Arlington Expo Center
1200 Ballpark Way
Arlington, TX 76011

https://www.twc.texas.gov/texas-conference-employers

Office of the Commissioner Representing Employers sponsors the Texas Conference for Employers, a series of employer seminars held each year throughout the state. Employers who attend the seminars learn about state and federal employment laws and the unemployment claim and appeal process. We assemble our best speakers to guide you through ongoing matters of concern to Texas employers and to answer any questions you have regarding your business.

We encourage every employer to attend at least one of these conferences every year, since the topics are updated whenever there are new laws, regulations or court cases. Each conference is geared toward small business owners, HR managers and assistants, payroll managers, and anyone responsible for the hiring and managing of employees.

All in-person meetings do have a virtual option available that is attended via Zoom. The same material is presented, and all informational handouts provided in-person, are provided in a digital format to virtual attendees. The virtual option is also great for companies that are headquartered outside of Texas and have operations within the state or planning to.

YOU'RE INVITED TO A NETWORKING EVENT! Come and join NORTH TEXAS PROFESSIONALS & SERVICE PROVIDERS networking group every 1st Tuesday of every month from 5pm-7pm at Boomer Jack's, 131 E Stacy Rd, Fairview (Allen/McKinney) 75069. This is a mix and mingle style business networking event open to anyone that is looking for an opportunity to connect and start building solid business relationships. Appetizers will be provided. Looking forward to seeing you there!
Thank you H-E-B ! Thank you to Juan-Carlos Ruck for sharing the H-E-B story - a story about H-E-B being founded out of necessity and hardship by a wife and mother, Florence Butt. The story was too good not to share.

Florence Butt found herself in a difficult position - a sick husband no longer able to work, a house full of sons to feed and just like that - she was the family breadwinner in 1905 when there were few opportunities for women. After trying to sell groceries door-to-door and getting doors slammed in her face, she bravely invested $60 into opening a tiny grocery store and put her sons to work delivering groceries around town (she was way ahead of her time – that just became a thing here in Allen over the pandemic). Thankfully it took off. She used her good fortune to help her community. Fast forward over a century later and H-E-B is still family run, only now they earn $30+ billion/year. They are still using their good fortune to help the communities they serve.

This story of a mother’s love, hard work and resilience to rise above hardship to provide for her family made us smile as it is a familiar story. It is the story of so many of our clients, especially the single moms who know that their children’s fate rests solely on their shoulders. Florence Butt wasn’t expecting to be the family breadwinner, yet these were the cards she was dealt. In moments of worry and fear, we wonder if she could have imagined the legacy she would create? We wish those who doubted her when she became somewhat of a unicorn of her day as a ā€œfemale entrepreneurā€, could see the legacy she created.

We will use the $10,000 donation to honor her legacy by helping women like Florence Butt rise out of crisis and into the lives they were meant to live. Thanks to the support of the corner grocery store with a Texas-sized heart, our client’s stories will be ones of hardship AND hope.

There are so many lessons in her story that we thought were worth remembering and sharing.

Thank you to H-E-B and for the donation, inspiration and future partnership to serve our fellow neighbors. Thank you to with the Allen Fairview Chamber for making the connection for us.

Join us on the 1st Monday of each month at 7pm via ZOOM to network and talk about your business. We provide a mix and mingle online after the meeting for you to have the chance to build solid business relationships. Looking forward to chatting with you online. (zoom link and password below).
