From Carol Shafto:
Happiness Alert: Hey, Everyone. Here is an opportunitty to do something inexpensive, easy, from home, that will really make a difference in the life of an incredible older (94) lady. First the address then the cute story: Margaret Manning, Tendercare Greenview, 1234 Golf Course Rd., Alpena, Mi 49707. I've known Margaret for many years - at least 25. She is absolutely lovely - and just happens to be the grandmother of my daughter-in-law Stephanie Shafto. She is now in the nursing home and has dementia with periods of great lucidity and others where she is functional but "foggy". She has noticed that no one has sent her a card! So she thinks her "garden club friends" must not know where she is. [So many old friends have died or are ill themselves - or DON'Tknow.] So she asked Stephanie to put an article in the paper telling people she is at Tendercare, knowing then they will respond. Remember when little hometown papers actually allowed that?! Anyhow, please be "the garden club friends" and more. We ALL have old cards lying around. Let's just get a bunch of them heading to Margaret. Maybe once a week or so. I'm getting out 10 today. And addressing them and putting them in a pile. I only really have to be thoughtful for an hour, once! Steph says even a few cards would make her so happy and think she hasn't been forgotten. This could be you, your mom, your gramma. Help us remember Margaret while we can. Thanks so much. I'll update you as to how she reacts.

House built in Alpena, Michigan by my great-great grandparents, passed down to my great grandparents, where my grandmother was raised. It was in the family for almost 90 years. Charles R. Henry (1856-1926) and his wife Florence Parshall Henry (1854-1920) built the house. After Charles died in 1926, it was occupied by Carl R. Henry (1887-1966) and Wilma Johnson Henry (1891-1982) who raised three daughters in this lovely home. I was fortunate to spend many holidays and summers playing in this house in my youth. It, and the family contents that had been passed down for generations, is what helped fuel my interest in genealogy.

Will there be a master gardener course offered again in Alpena this fall or in the new year? I learned about it too late last year to sign up, so I'd love to try and take it over fall/winter to prepare for next year.
Hello, I'm an Alpena newbie with some garden questions, and I'm not sure who to ask. I have a huge, sunny, and tree-less yard I want to fill with native plants this year, but I'm not sure what exactly to get because I'd like to get plants suited for Alpena's native habitat type. Should I do prairie? What is the soil like in town?
