PA CareerLink® Huntingdon County is proud to shout out Joshua Carroll. Josh was a Dislocated Worker who started his On the Job Training position with Joseph T. Berrena Mechanicals in January 2021.
Josh worked in Philadelphia when COVID hit, was furloughed, and decided to move closer to home to figure out the next steps. Knowing the Berrena family for a long time, his friend Jessica Berrena suggested he check out JT Berrena. Since he worked in sales in Philadelphia, Berrena's wanted Josh to learn the mechanical side of the business and work in business development for them. He was introduced to Denise Hancock from PA CareerLink®, and she helped him enroll in the On the Job Training program.
Josh is really enjoying his job and the learning experience and says, "I remember seeing all the trucks growing up, and I knew they had a great long-standing business. When we go out into the field, we take measurements, assess the problem, and make sure we have everything we need when we go to do a seamless install." He found that the theory and reading instructions are important, but the real-life, hands-on experience is invaluable to learning the job.
"A lot of my friends got displaced during COVID, and many went back home. I'm on a new path with a new skill set. I see the potential of this job and being closer to my family and friends; it's a path I see myself on"

Time for your DREAM JOB! Get busy working through PA CareerLink®'s On the Job Training program and ask about Lampire Biological Laboratories. A big thank you for your amazing dedication to Bedford County Greg Krug & Gary Klinger. The folks at Lampire know that their biggest assets are their employees. "PA CareerLink® understands that and works very closely to make matches that work for us." Our company is "anything but a widget" Greg said, "we have a very complex business so it's not easy to find the right employee". "We know we can work with headhunters, but with PA CareerLink®, it's a totally different feel - they are more receptive to our needs." Gary said "they get to know your business and have a vested interest in getting to know the job seeker and make the right match. They play more of a role of a partner than a service." Best said about Bedford County by owner Greg Krug "We found an area where honesty and work ethic are the norm." "Everyday our team comes to work and know they are helping animals' lives and humans' lives around the world". The Golden Rule Home Center in Hyndman is a great place to work! Rhonda Sites, secretary, and supervisor said that they have loved working with PA CareerLink® to find student employees to fill in the gaps at the store. James, their current employee, does anything that needs to be done. "He's great with the customers and has learned a lot about the products sold in the store, especially the lumber. He helps the customer find what they need and loads it up for them." For youth employment opportunities like this, visit https://ecs.page.link/coJxx

A big shout out to Matt Price, Executive Director of the Huntingdon County Visitors Bureau, a partner with the Army Corp of Engineers. Matt has been utilizing PA CareerLink's Paid Work Experience program for 13 years. The students they have hired in the past have all be high school-aged has been a fantastic experience. The students work at the Lake Raystown Visitor Information Center, which, as Matt says, "helps to augment the summer staff in a way that they could not otherwise. They answer visitor questions, give directions, assist in gift shop sales, and really learn more about the area they live." Price goes on to say, "once you answer questions about where things are and what there is to do, it opens their eyes to the great area where we live."

Our employee shout-out is Sarah Helman, Coordinator of PA CareerLink® Youth Services. Today we recognize her awesome work with the Johnstown Youth Corp. The Johnstown Youth Corps will be heading into its 3rd year of operation under Goodwill of the Southern Alleghenies and PA CareerLink® of Cambria County. The program is made possible in partnership with the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies, and the Southern Alleghenies Workforce Development Board, the region’s leader, and active partner in workforce development efforts. The program provides 10 local youth the opportunity to complete 240 hours of paid work experience and professional development training under the direction of a Program Coordinator and 2 Crew Leaders. Projects are philanthropic in nature and align with the county's Vision 2025 initiative. Youth participants (ages 16-24) not only gain valuable job readiness skills and work experience; they also develop a strong sense of community pride, appreciation for the area's unique history, networking opportunities, and lasting friendships.

Securing a job through the Paid Work Experience from PA CareerLink® was a great opportunity for James Close. James works at the Golden Rule Home Center in Hyndman. "I get to leave school and start work at noon, and I am learning so much about communication and the construction and lumber industry. I enjoy waiting on customers, and the people here treat me like family." James will be leaving soon to pursue a career in the military but said he would miss the people at Golden Rule Home Center very much.
