Altoona Food Bank The Altoona Food Bank was started by the First United Methodist Church of Altoona in 1979. It's purpose is to provide food to those in need in Blair Cty.

The Altoona Food Bank is funded completely by donations. We receive no government funding. We graciously accept any donations of food or money. Donations are accepted any days we are open, at the 21st side door. We are staffed by an all-volunteer crew. Anyone interested in donating or becoming a volunteer can contact us at 814-942-8415.

The Altoona Food Bank will remain CLOSED until Wednesday, January 6th. We will re-open on that day at our NEW address:
2318 N BRANCH AVE. Our hours and days will remain the same:

A REMINDER: You are required to wear a face mask when coming for your food.
ALSO many are coming more than once a month, which is not permitted. This went into effect on July 1st. (that notice is posted at the side door). Understand that others need food and we must be able to serve all those in the community. PLEASE refrain from coming more than once a month. IF there is a GENUINE need, ask to speak to a Board member - one is always present on Mon. Wed. and Fri. -Thank you for your understanding regarding these matters.

Lent begins on March 6th. Take one non-perishable item from your cupboard and place in a box. At the end of Lent donate that box of food to the Altoona Food Bank. You will be helping those who may not have enough to have a happy Easter. Thank you

RSVP donates to help veterans.

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Blair and Huntingdon Counties has donated items to help support programs at the James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center that address the health and welfare of local veterans.

The medical center identified items it needed and RSVP volunteers provided, among other things:
• Arts and crafts for recreational programs used by veteran patients for therapy, hobby and leisure
• Gift cards and household startup items for a program for homeless veterans establishing permanent housing
• Baby clothes and care items for new veteran mothers
• Personal care and comfort items distributed to hospitalized patients and homeless veterans

RSVP volunteers brought the items, valued at $1,737, to the RSVP Volunteer Recognition banquets in both counties in April. This is the second year the volunteers have done this. Judy Baird, Judy Hoover and Irene Homer, representing RSVP Volunteers in Blair & Huntingdon counties, present donations for veterans to Ronda Wagner, Volunteer Services Assistant at the VA Medical Center (see photo).

RSVP thanks the volunteers for their generosity and our veterans for their service.

We are available to accept donations any Monday, Wednesday or Friday between 9:00 am and Noon, on the 21st Street side of the Community Action building (which is located on the corner of 6th Ave & 21st St). Donations are accepted without appointment, however, if you can not come during these times please contact us at (814) 942-8415

What items can be accepted by the Altoona Food Bank for distribution? A partial list is below:

Spaghetti/pasta and sauces
Cereal or oatmeal
Canned vegetables
Canned fruits
Sugar, flour and rice
Canned meats (chicken, Spam, tuna, etc)
Condiments (ketchup, mustard, BBQ sauce, mayo)
Juice
Salad dressing (Ranch, French, Italian)
Tomato products (diced, stewed, sauces)
Soups
Dried beans
Coffee, tea, hot chocolate
Macaroni and cheese
Crackers (saltines, oyster)
Peanut butter and jelly
Applesauce, fruits cups
Granola/snack bars
Baking items (cake mixes, brownies, cornbread)

We also accept - diapers (all sizes), baby food, baby formula, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothpaste and toothbrushes, deodorant, feminine products, laundry detergent, soap (bars or liquid), toilet paper, dryer sheets, hand sanitizer.

The Altoona Food bank receives donated food from a variety of sources including individuals, organizations, church groups, businesses. While we appreciate the generosity, we receive items that cannot be used due to food safety guidelines and governmental regulations and therefore must be discarded. Discarding a product is a financial expense to the Food. Bank. See our guidelines below.

- All donated items that are past the expiration date cannot be distributed and must be discarded.
- No home canned goods can be accepted.
- We cannot receive and distribute any opened or partially used items.
- We must discard items that are severely dented or damaged.
