One of the greatest honors that I enjoy has nothing to do with being the Mayor or a Businessman. It is Memorial Day when I load up my Mom and Aunt Rita and we drive through the countryside decorating family resting spots. Our day takes us from the Alva cemetery to Waynoka and back through Pleasant View which is a mile off the Dacoma blacktop. I enjoy every bit of the day and it’s extremely important to me to show remembrance of my elders and listen to all the stories that my passengers have to share. Pleasant View is mostly important to me because it is where my Gpa Henry Melton and my Great Great Grandfather Michael “Lovey” Murray (my Mom’s side of the family) is played to rest. I do my best to clean the stones off and make sure that any urns are secured to the headstone. I talk to them and tell them how much I miss them and that I hope they are proud of the person I’ve become. Pleasant View is a very old cemetery and there are many Markers or headstones that just don’t have much on them and it’s obvious that nobody of connection/relation is around any longer and it truly saddens me to see memory of them fade away. I’ve adopted Peachy and several others, some I know and many that I don’t. Mom and Aunt Rita always make sure to have extra flowers for my adoptees and I think that’s just really cool ! Huge shout out to Ethan who is Alva’s new Sexton, our city cemetery looks wonderful today. If you don’t visit and decorate your family’s headstones, you should. And if you do, please think about buying a few extra flowers and decorating headstones of people/souls who have nobody to remember them. It’s nothing less than warming to the heart. I truly hope everyone has a wonderful Memorial weekend in remembrance of the people in your life that loved you and have passed.

Hello Everyone !!
So, at the last Council meeting we announced Matt Adair had resigned from his seat. Matt, Thank you for your service to the community ! As Mayor it is my duty to find a replacement for Ward 3 Seat 2. This appointment will be for roughly a year until the next voting session. The 8 members of the council are the absolute authority for our City government so the selection won’t be handled lightly. I obviously will be looking for someone that is aligned with the direction that Alva would like to see but don’t misinterpret that to be that I’m looking for a “Yes” person. You can go to Alvaok.org and find the Ward map to see if you live in that area. So, my friends, let’s have some amazing people throw their name in the hat. Please understand that if you are interested, you need to be the person that reaches out to me. Thank you 🙏

So I’m wrapping up the nominations for appointment to the Alva Rec Board. Thank you to everyone that has responded and wishes to serve. If I have left anyone out please message me and I apologize in advance. These names will be passed in front of the Rec Board and City Council so that they may weigh in. I always invite anyone’s positive comments for any particular candidate but please keep negativity to yourself.

So, I am now looking for another amazing Alva citizen that would like to serve on the ARC Board. Please send me your name and any qualities that you have that would make you an excellent candidate for this role. What a crazy few days !!! So, I was sworn in last Tuesday evening and I thought the Council meeting went great.
There was an agenda item associated with our water well field down South. A family that gave those water rights to the city of Alva 4 generations ago has decided to sell 240 acres out of the family and the potential buyer was asking us for water rights that went far outside of the original agreement. The governing body as a whole is opposed to that and continues to make decisions that absolutely protect the aquifer that our city gets our water from.
My first day ended with the fire at Scribner Salvage and my heart goes out to the entire Scribner family. In the midst of that, Jim was suffering the loss of his brother that lived in the Enid area. Please keep one of Alva’s favorite characters in your prayers as he navigates forward.
Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending the Chamber’s coffee social at K&S tire along with other members from City Hall. It was a great time and we enjoyed hearing from Dr Newton along with representatives for Frank Lucas and James Lankford.
So I know that I stated that I would like to return to 2 Council meetings per month but after talking to a couple of people involved I realized that not every month do we have agenda items that would be found concerning to the citizens so I am digressing from that for the moment. I do intend to work towards getting the agenda out early enough for everyone to see so that if there is a need we can easily set a “special meeting” or a “town hall” so that it can be researched and discussed properly and to the satisfaction of the community that we serve. I do hope everyone understands this as a continuation of my promise to promote and protect public input.
Going forward I am getting to know everyone, meet with the different departments and continue to develop what I see as places we, as a City, need to work on and towards.
Thank you for your support and I continue to be excited to be in this new chapter of my life as your Mayor !!!

Firstly, I haven’t had the time to change this page to “Mayor Joey Melton” which I intend to use going forward to keep everyone informed.
One of the first things I will be doing is going back to 2 Council meetings per month. I intend to have the agenda developed early and posted. The first meeting of the month will be “discussion” only with the ability for City Government officials to speak freely back and forth with Citizens about the issues in the agenda. Then we can all take that from there and the People can continue to research and make contact with their Ward representatives which will be followed by the Council meeting on the 3rd Monday. That meeting will be the “Action” agenda on all the same agenda items.
My aspirations in this is that it will give EVERYONE, Council and Citizens alike time to make the very best choices for OUR City !!
I understand at this moment that we are finally being told, or getting to find out that the site South of Alva may be a data center and many people are finding that to be very concerning and rightfully so.
I advise everyone that is concerned to immediately reach out to your Ward Reps and tell them to table any matters regarding this until proper exposure, research, and public input can be had.
I unfortunately do not get sworn in as Mayor until after the AUA meeting but I intend to reach out to all the Council Reps today and voice the same concerns and expectations for them to table this until it can be handled in a way that is satisfactory to the overwhelming number of people that voted for me.
Thank you to everyone that supported me and continues to support me ! I’m fighting for each and every one of you along with every single Citizen of this amazing community !! As always, please like and share so the word gets out !!
Respectfully, soon to be Mayor Joey Melton

Thank you everyone !!!
