One of the greatest honors that I enjoy has nothing to do with being the Mayor or a Businessman. It is Memorial Day when I load up my Mom and Aunt Rita and we drive through the countryside decorating family resting spots. Our day takes us from the Alva cemetery to Waynoka and back through Pleasant View which is a mile off the Dacoma blacktop. I enjoy every bit of the day and it’s extremely important to me to show remembrance of my elders and listen to all the stories that my passengers have to share. Pleasant View is mostly important to me because it is where my Gpa Henry Melton and my Great Great Grandfather Michael “Lovey” Murray (my Mom’s side of the family) is played to rest. I do my best to clean the stones off and make sure that any urns are secured to the headstone. I talk to them and tell them how much I miss them and that I hope they are proud of the person I’ve become. Pleasant View is a very old cemetery and there are many Markers or headstones that just don’t have much on them and it’s obvious that nobody of connection/relation is around any longer and it truly saddens me to see memory of them fade away. I’ve adopted Peachy and several others, some I know and many that I don’t. Mom and Aunt Rita always make sure to have extra flowers for my adoptees and I think that’s just really cool ! Huge shout out to Ethan who is Alva’s new Sexton, our city cemetery looks wonderful today. If you don’t visit and decorate your family’s headstones, you should. And if you do, please think about buying a few extra flowers and decorating headstones of people/souls who have nobody to remember them. It’s nothing less than warming to the heart. I truly hope everyone has a wonderful Memorial weekend in remembrance of the people in your life that loved you and have passed.
