One Iowa learned today that our co-founder, Sharon Malheiro, died last night. Our hearts are in mourning that we lost a legend.
Not only did Sharon pave the way for Iowa to become the third state in the nation to secure the right for same-sex couples to marry, but the Varnum v. Brien ruling helped guide the way for a federal Supreme Court ruling in 2015.
Sharon continued to champion the rights of LGBTQ Iowans until the end of her days. I spoke with her a couple of weeks ago, and she was brainstorming ideas of who we should be talking to stop the harmful anti-trans legislation in our state. She was always quick with a story of what worked before and what didn’t. She wanted more than anything for us to keep fighting for what was right.
As important as the fight for the LGBTQ community was to her, she always told me to enjoy my family, that she loved me, and to tell the team she was proud of them. Sharon loved hard. How lucky are we that we got to experience her kindness, her stories, and her hearty laugh?
She was one of the good ones. We will forever stand on her shoulders as someone who changed our state and country. A more detailed compilation of her life will be available soon. Please leave us memories of Sharon here: https://forms.gle/qCnDe4AFFhppLsy67
Sharon Malheiro is, was, and always will be One Iowa.
We will share details about her final arrangements with you as soon as we have them. I hope you will help us celebrate the true advocate that Sharon was.
