One of the benefits of being your Legislator is meeting and working with leaders in each of the departments. I'm impressed with the knowledge, education, experience, and commitment to good government and to public service, stewardship, and good works. I've long known how much Mark Poloncarz deeply cares about our County. I'm so impressed with Dr. Burstein and was glad to see the physicians of Erie County leaving their busy individual practices to take a public stand to support Dr. Burstein. Their letter is attached.
Please read the full. People say, "Follow the science.". This is the science. The schools have not applied recommendations in the same way. Schools such as sacred heart didn't miss a beat and had one down day followed by full classes on line and then in person as soon as allowed with robust testing. Other districts seemed to be on leadership transitions and had other challenges that a private school didn't face. The state sets the rules and the district implements the rules. Our commissioner if health gives guidance. Passes on information and recommendations and has Please read the full letter, but this is the start:
"Dr. Gale Burstein's proactive approach to the management of the COVID-19 pandemic in Erie County should
be praised, not dismissed. The calls for Dr. Gale Burstein’s resignation by the WNY Students First parent
group as Erie County Health Commissioner are truly unfortunate. Dr. Burstein has consistently and accurately
guided the most prudent course at a time when lives are at stake and when there have been so many
unknowns surrounding the transmission of this unprecedented airborne illness."

2021 ABBG Customer Satisfaction Survey - NFTA

Your voice matters. NFTA wants our opinions.
Complete the surveys whether a rider or not.
My opinion: Public transportation should: get people into the workforce and out of poverty, get people to jobs that can support a family and into middle class, allow people who can't or don't have cars to get to vital services and full participate in the community, and help our environment. Here's the info from NFTA:
NFTA-Metro, in conjunction with the American Bus Benchmarking Group (ABBG) and 20 other transit agencies, is asking for rider feedback through our annual customer satisfaction surveys.
These surveys will be available online through Sunday, May 9th and respondents have the opportunity to enter to win one of five monthly Metro passes.
Please feel free to take each survey and pass the links along.

Proud to represent District 5 and with April Baskin, represent the County, at the renaming of stadium and meet Thurman Thomas, all time great Buffalo Bill, who is also supporting our community in his contracting company, 34 Group. Can't wait for Bills season with full reopening. BCBS promises many great outreach to make our community healthier and health care more equitable. And totally pro mascot, would not come out of character.

New York | Covid-19 Vaccine

Vaccines are available in Rochester (but not til May), Syracuse also later, and Potsdam a 4.5 hour drive this month. Includes comorbidities including over 30 BMI, restaurant workers, door dash, people over 60, etc. The sooner we get vaccinated, the sooner we'll have herd immunity and the sooner the economy reopens fully. Over 500,000 deaths from COVID and according to news last week, new unemployment claims were 700k but that was after 51 WEEKS of new weekly claims over 1 million! Making calls these past week to neighbors, so many I talked to who have not gone out for a year until they had the second vaccine. Support small business, get a vaccine, support education, get a vaccine. https://am-i-eligible.covid19vaccine.health.ny.gov/

03/10/2021

Starting March 10, at 8am, all New Yorkers 60 years of age and older will be eligible to receive the vaccine. Beginning March 17, eligibility will expand again, allowing public-facing essential workers from governmental and nonprofit entities to get the vaccine. This expansion also includes public-facing essential building services workers. New Yorkers will be able to make appointments through the Am I Eligible tool or by calling the NYS Vaccine Hotline at 1-833-NYS-4-VAX (1-833-697-4829).

Moments ago, the State Assembly passed legislation that would fully repeal the state’s COVID-19 nursing home and hospital immunity provisions.
The bill now moves to the Senate.
This is an important law that should be supported.

We all worry when is my turn for a vaccine but it really is important to allow seniors to be full vaccinated first. Dr. Burstein noted at the January 28 Health and Human Service Committee meeting that seniors account for 12% of the population but 80% of the COVID cases.

Please help our seniors get fully vaccinated and help them get their appointments and vaccinate the 12% because 80% of COVID cases are from our most vulnerable population.

May all those who lost their life rest in peace and may we remember their loved ones in word and deed.

Good News! First week NO NURSING HOMES with 5% positivity rates in Erie County. Thank goodness.

01/26/2021

Good News! The Leg. had passed a resolution requiring the DOH to weekly give a list of nursing homes in Erie County who had over 5% positivity. I kept trying to find the list attached to the letter from Dr, Burstein, then read this sentence, "For the week ending January 23, 2021, no nursing homes in Erie County had a percent positive rate of more than 5% based on the data available to our department. " First time

LEGISLATOR VINAL SECURES FUNDING FOR THE JEWISH REPERTORY THEATRE, A PROGRAM OF THE JCC OF GREATER BUFFALO - Step Out Buffalo

Proud to support JCC's Jewish Repertory Theatre of Western NY, which is a first class theater in Amherst NY. All our performing arts need support from all age groups. The JCC has a special deal for FIVE shows for $80. That's FIVE shows, not per show. What a great date night idea for you and your sweetheart to have dinner and a show, with supporting a local restaurants too, for five take outs over this season with five live screened performances. Buffalo has such great theaters, more than most places by far, and such great restaurants, at a world class level. This doesn't just happen, and now we all need to get behind these people and support them, while having five great date nights.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: 211 reached out requesting assistance in helping deliver emergency food to individuals who are in COVID quarantine and do not have anyone who can purchase/provide food for them. (211 is the group of dedicated County employees who handle all the calls of needs and problems. They were the ones who told us last year the greatest need was tax prep. They are a great group and really smart and proactive. They solve most all problems and only reach out when they really need help.) 211 and FeedMore are overwhelmed with requests and are looking for partners to help with these "last mile" deliveries. They are asking if Legislators with District Offices (mine's at 13 Lincoln - Next to Scoops Ice Cream, near Main and Harlem) to keep a few boxes of emergency food at their offices and deliver the food as instructed by 211. The box would be left on the porch or at the door. There would be no physical contact with the recipient. Let me know if you'd be willing to help with this on a regular basis. Please call me or Chris at 836-0198 and let us know if you could do it 2 hours a week until the vaccines are out in full.
SMALL BUSINESSES: 1000 small businesses were awarded grants today from the county from the COVID money. Grants ranged from 2500 to 45000 and was for businesses who didn't get the PPP grants. Announcements came out today. We're in this together. Buy local and keep going.
Jeanne! Congratulations on being elected an Erie County Legislator! How thrilling, and, so much work! Mazel tov!
The legislative district office is open for calls, emails, etc. 13 Lincoln Rd. Amherst, NY 14226, Phone: (716) 836-0198, Fax: (716) 836-0199, [email protected] or [email protected]. My friend and mentor, Lillian Cowan, who took me under her wing when I was in my 20's and she in her 80's and lived til 103 with all her facilities to the end, said that certain lawyers complain about too much work. She said I thank God for the work and the ability to do it. I have always felt that way about the law and feel that way about the government service. So I am thankful for the opportunity to be of service.
That's a considerable achievement!.You should be proud!.
Congratulations on becoming a legislator!.That's a significant achievement!.
Made calls today for the Buffalo Jewish Federation's 2020 Campaign for Jewish Buffalo. Talked to a lot of nice donors and volunteers including Brenda Freedman who motivated us. Jacqui Berger who called with us and pictured here former sargent of arms of Erie county democratic party. We met the $50,000 Super Sunday goal. Full goal is $2 million used to help children, the elderly, families in crisis, victims of terror attacks and the seven great local Jewish agencies. Includes Jewish engagement, education, social justice. Also mentioned $250,000 grant obtained by NY Senator Tim Kennedy for security help at synagogues-- Jewish Federation needs to raise $50,000 more to do what needs to be done for security. If you can give, give. Don't have to be Jewish to give. We stand shoulder to shoulder with good people doing good. Show your support and do your part. Buffalojewishfederation.org/donate
We love Jeanne! You will not find a more dedicated, loving, or more sincere person in your corner, willing to solve problems that need solving, and unafraid of those that hold back progress
First hike on goal to hike all 18 of our county parks. This was Bailey Peninsula Natural Habitat Park now called Thomas Higgins Park. Where Buffalo River splits under the Bailey Avenue bridge. Park is on both sides of Bailey. Short walk to the point where river splits and on other side so many young trees planted -- behind Southside elementary.
