Life Update! Got promoted. LTJG (O2E) ➡️ LT (O3E)

I have been missing from this account for few months now as I have been busy navigating life.

But wanted to update for those who follow me.
2 years ago passed my PANCE, got commissioned as a new Navy PA and 2 years later got promoted to Lieutenant. It's been a very challenging 2 years as I learned to be comfortable with patient care and being a Naval Officer and still continue to learn a lot.
Now the real challenge starts as getting promoted to next rank is not automatic and requires a lot of sacrifices and hardwork. I hope in the next 6 years I have a post stating I've made it to O4(Lieutenant Commander).

PS. Ill try to get back to a very overdue responses here.

Congratulations to all those who received the great news that they were selected for the Navy HSCP (Health Services Collegiate Program) for the PA School...
I know I have been less active lately but wanted to let people know I still check my messages (less frequently these days but I'll be better). ..
I have received few messages with the great news already from some of you. 🥳
I will work of making a FAQ section to help shift through basic information to make this easier...
Keep those questions coming, if you know anyone interested send them my way, or have them check the HSCP Facebook group.

🎉!!!10 YEARS!!! 🎉
I can't believe today marks 10 years of AD service for me already.

10 months Commissioned - Navy PA
7 years enlisted - Navy Corpsman
2 years 2 months - Navy HSCP, PA school

I am thankful for being accepted into the Navy HSCP and enlisting 3 years ago, before starting PA school.
Just like that this got me 3 years closer to retirement. 😁

10 more years to go till retirement 🥳

The biggest reason you will not qualify for Navy HSCP is applying TOO late.
___
The deadline for application is October 1st.
This means you have to have:
1. Completed and submitted your entire application
2. To even qualify for the application you need to have been accepted to a PA program
___
BUT how is this possible if most PA schools don't even send out acceptances until November or December?

To work around this issue, I've been told that you should apply to a few schools that do early admissions, like starting May. Even if you don't plan to go to that school, at least if you're lucky you get accepted and can start the scholarship application. Then when you get into your top program you can update your scholarship to the school you attend.

I know this isn't ideal for a lot of reasons but it is a work around the timing of application.
___
If you have more questions just DM me and I'll do my best to answer everyone.

P.S. if you know someone who is even remotely interested, let them know about this trick.

Today marks 3 months of me seeing patients independently as a certified PA. I dont have much wisdom to part eloquently, just some thoughts and experiences. Here's some things that have crossed my mind.
1. One if my favorite lines during clinicals, "Follow-up with your P*P" has a different meaning now when you realize you are the P*P. 😅
2. I know pretty much nothing, specially the first month was a huge challenge.
3. Day 1, first patient, first complete note signed under my name, felt like all the stress of PA school combined into one. 😭
4. Up to date, medscape, lexicomp are my best friends.
5. 3 months into seeing patients regularly, I still feel a little anxious.
6. I'm still studying almost everyday as I was during PA school, just not for the EORs, no stress of grades but more stress knowing you are responsible for your patients outcome.
7. I've made treatment choices that aren't the best, fortunately I have a great support staff and supervision physician to be better, and I am learning from every encounter.
8. I am still learning to be comfortable saying 'I dont know' to patients.

I'll say:
- Focus on your confidence to see patients and how to utilize your resources to find the answers.
- Stay humble and be comfortable to ask for help.
- It's okay to say you don't know but have a plan on what you can do for the patient, i.e. specialty consult, or further targeted testing, etc.

I'm fortunate to have a great work environment/support staff as a new grad PA and I hope you all find one too who will help you grow and become the best PAs out there.

Since CASPA is just around the corner I wanted to take time to reintroduce myself.
I am a recent Graduate and have been working as a Family Medicine PA in the U.S. Navy for the last 3 months.
___
I started this page to help prospective students with questions regarding PA school, Navy, and more importantly Navy scholarship called Health Services Collegiate Program (HSCP).
___
I am not a recruiter and I do not have any financial incentives for what I do.
I used Navy HSCP myself and through my experiences wanted to help future applicants get the info they are looking for to make the application process as smooth as possible.

Happy valentines day!
This is the first time we are able to spend valentines day together in the past 3 years. Pre PA life and PA school while living in different states.
I know there will be time when deployments and military duty will keep us apart in the future, that's why spending time with your loved ones is so important.
We are snowed in and still have work to do, but just being able to have dinner together makes us happy!

So this happened today. Feeling hopeful for 2021. It takes all of is to beat this.
I also post this to show my friends and family that as a healthcare provider I am willing to take this step, despite the possible small side effects. The science behind this is promising and sound. I'm hoping this will prompt people to seriously consider getting vaccinated.

Update! Life of a Navy HSCP or HPSP PA students after graduating PA school.
It is true that we don't have to stress about searching for a job like our cohorts, we do have stressors in different forms.
1. Not knowing where the Navy will send you (It can range from where you wanted to be to across the globe in a different continent) with little or no time to prepare.
2. Waiting. And waiting for orders, waiting to go to Officer Development School, ODS, aka Officer Bootcamp.
3. We still have to get credentialing done and state licensing (recommended)
All of this takes time. It can range from days to weeks to even months.
So, it's not a simple graduate PA school and you start working right away.
I graduated 1st September, and finally will get to my Duty Station end of November, will start the onboarding process in December.
PS. I graduated last Thursday ODS (aka Officer bootcamp). I am now officially officially a LTJG, O2 in the Navy. 🥳

1st time wearing the Khakis. This week, we finally had our inspection and given permission to start wearing Khaki uniform.
This won't mean much for many and many will come to appreciate this soon. However, as a prior enlisted transitioning into officer ranks, this moment is significant.
Our Chief asked all the prior enlisted after the inspection, what we were feeling and what this means?
Here are some of the responses:
•Feeling humble
•Feeling of accomplishment
•Feeling the weight of the responsibilities that comes with this
All these are the same feelings I am having. It feels a little wierd but at the same time I'm looking forward to help and guide the junior sailors reach their goals.
In our Class Chief words, 'Ultimately, this uniform is nothing more than just a piece of cloth. But, the meaning behind this is what makes this a symbol of leadership and excellence.'

One year ago, I started this page with a little of trepidation, some anxiety, but with lots of determination. ..
My goal was to spread light to Navy scholarships, especially Health Services Collegiate Program (HSCP), that are available to future PA students to help with cost of attending PA school...
I was not very IG savvy and I couldn't find info that could help me through my application process. Thus, I decided to journal about PA school, Navy, and HSCP...
All I wanted to do was to help at least one person with their journey into the Navy with HSCP, and 1 year later, I can say that I have done more than I thought I could. I know the Navy PA community is small, but we are a proud one...
This is all thanks to all your support. I've met future Navy PAs, some who just started their Navy careers, some about to start their Navy career, and some who have been serving for years...
I am glad I stepped outside my comfort zone. I have learned a lot. I hope to continue to provide useful content regarding PA school and PA and Navy life.
Thank you all!
