DEATH INVESTIGATION – TRINITY RIVER BRIDGE

Sheriff Brian Hawthorne reports, on February 22, 2026 at approximately 10:05 PM, Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a vehicle fire underneath the Trinity River Bridge on the west bank of the river. After emergency crews extinguished the fire, Deputies located human remains in the passenger compartment of the vehicle.

Detectives immediately began an investigation into the death. During the course of the investigation, Detectives located a social media post by the Sabine County Sheriff’s Office. That post referenced a shooting that occurred earlier in the evening of February 22 on Bronson Cemetery Road in Sabine County. According to the Sabine County Sheriff’s Office, Todd Stevens (36-year-old male of Bronson, Texas) allegedly shot Cody Thompson (43-year-old male of Burkeville, Texas) before fleeing the scene in Thompson’s vehicle, described as a 1990s model Chevrolet extended cab pickup.

The vehicle located in Chambers County matches the description provided in the Sabine County post.

At this time, the identity of the deceased individual from the truck has not been confirmed. The Chambers County Sheriff’s Office is actively coordinating with the Sabine County Sheriff’s Office as their investigation into the reported shooting and search for Todd Stevens remains ongoing. Todd Stevens has active felony warrants for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon related to the shooting of Thompson, with the potential for upgraded charges as the investigation continues. Stevens will also face charges in Chambers County.

Anyone with information on Todd Stevens whereabouts is asked to call the Sabine County Sheriff’s Office or the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division.

I want to commend the Chambers County Sheriff's Office for their swift and effective work in apprehending the suspect involved in this recent road rage shooting. Because of their quick action and dedication to public safety, a dangerous situation was brought under control and we are grateful that no one was seriously injured.

Road rage incidents can escalate in seconds. A few reminders for staying safe on the road:

•Avoid engaging with aggressive drivers — don’t make eye contact or respond to provocation.

•Give them space. Slow down or change lanes if it’s safe to do so.

•Do not retaliate or try to “teach them a lesson.”

•If you feel threatened, call 911 and provide your location.

•If someone follows you, drive to a public, well-lit area or a police station.

Let’s continue working together to keep our community safe — on and off the road.

ROAD RAGE SHOOTER ARRESTED

Chambers County Sheriff’s Office deputies quickly apprehended a shooting suspect less than 24 hours after a violent road‑rage incident in Baytown.

On February 1, 2026, at approximately 9:45 PM, deputies responded to reports of a shooting near Kilgore Parkway and Southwinds Drive. The victim told deputies he had been chased by another driver who fired multiple shots at his vehicle.

Detectives immediately launched an investigation, recovering a bullet from a tire on the victim's truck. Using the victim’s statements and surveillance footage from the area, detectives were able to identify a suspect vehicle, locate it, and detain the driver. Evidence collected during the traffic stop and from a nearby residence provided detectives with probable cause to seek a warrant for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, a second‑degree felony.

The suspect, Christian Canales, of Baytown, was taken into custody and charged for the shooting. Bond for the aggravated assault charge was set at $200,000 by Justice of the Peace Precinct 2, Judge Mike Wheat.

The Chambers County Sheriff’s Office extends its gratitude to community members who assisted in gathering evidence, as well as to the deputies and detectives who worked swiftly to bring this case to a close. Acts of violence like this have no place in Chambers County, and we remain committed to keeping our community safe.
