You may have seen images of Monday's gas meter fire near downtown Anchorage. We wanted to share some context on how natural gas fires are safely handled.

When a natural gas meter is on fire, the safest response is typically to let the gas burn while crews work to shut off the underground supply. While that might seem surprising, a controlled flame is much safer than letting unburned gas escape into the air, where it could accumulate in a closed space and explode.

To stop the flow of gas, ENSTAR crews may need to dig down and reach the underground gas line. Emergency utility locates are requested immediately as underground utilities must be marked to prevent further damage at the scene. While ENSTAR crews prepare to access the line, firefighters secure and cool the area to protect nearby people and property.

This is standard practice for gas utilities and fire departments across the country. ENSTAR annually trains with all fire departments and emergency responders in our service area, reviewing tactics used for fires and natural gas related emergencies.

While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, please take a minute to review these safety reminders:

ENSTAR has responded to 10 gas meter tampering incidents at commercial buildings in Midtown Anchorage over the past three weeks. Our partners at the Anchorage Police Department are actively investigating.

Every year, our team looks forward to loading up the ENSTAR natural gas grills and heading over to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson - JBER and last Friday was no exception!

We were honored to support the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce's annual Military Appreciation Picnic at Buckner Fields. Grilling for thousands of Alaska's service members and their families on a beautiful sunny day is just a small way for us to say thank you for everything you do for our community and our country.
