Big change from this morning sunrise to now!
We are ready, just waiting on the snow.

The City of Anderson Public Works Department would like to notify the community that we will be fully staffed for this evening’s winter storm. Crews will work continuously in two 12 hr. shifts until the roads are clear. This will include 2 trucks all of which are equipped with snow removal equipment. A backhoe & skid steer with plow attachment if needed. These trucks will initially concentrate on emergency snow routes/main roads and then begin to branch out to neighboring side streets.

Just a reminder that crews are able to work more effectively when there are no vehicles on the roadways to navigate around. Thank you for your patience.

Some odd and end projects here lately. Today’s photos show some new speed bumps installed, that were approved by city council in regards to safety concerns. Also welded up a new sign today! In the photos you will notice blue and white paint marks and you may have noticed them around where you live. We are currently in the process of mapping our water system and are in the process of gps locating every valve and fire hydrant in the city.

Show of hands 👋🏻 who has seen the big green truck over near Casey’s or around town? We recently received a grant for sewer inspection/sewer line cleaning they been in town for a couple weeks, and we have been working with them daily. Running cameras down our sewer lines and doing general inspections of our sewer infrastructure.

Sorry in advance long post!

The past 2 weeks we have been on the hunt, yes the hunt for water. With a steady rise at our water meter at one of our wells we knew it needed to be found. With weeks of searching high and low, here and there couldn’t find water anywhere. We even started using thermal imaging to look for hot spot at night. No luck until we noticed a stream of water in a area near the creek. After testing several other stream earlier on we didn’t have high hopes especially since there was no waterlines big enough on that side of the highway. While walking down to the stream we started to smell Chlorine with a test we confirmed it and had a general area as to where the leak was located. We then came up with a game plan and teamed up with (MRWA) Missouri Rural Water Association. Next we started spot digging area as you may have seen around town like the one in the picture below. These areas have water mains in them and are dug up so we can flow test the line ( find out how many gallons per minute flowing through the pipe). MRWA came down an performed the flow test with their machine and with all the spots we had dug, we located not just 1 but 2 leaks in 1 day of flow testing. With that being said some of these spots are still open These areas will be fixed and a permanent box will be set so we can flow test in the future like the one in the picture at the ball field. In the future flow testing will be done by Anderson now since we have been approved to purchase a flow meter, and more areas may see permanent flow boxes. Distance from water with chlorine to where the leak was located at was around 200 yards or more, on the other side of the highway. You will notice in one picture with multiple holes only one has water, thats because it was draining as fast as it was coming out.

Rules!!! How many gpd (Gallons Per Day) did the combination of these 2 leaks save

So I thought everyone could use a good laugh today! This morning was rough getting up and about with this cold 🥶 Any ways if you know me, I’m not a morning person by no means and I got a metal 9 ft long 6ft tall dinosaur 🦖 in my front yard. Well first thing I did as soon as I woke up was start defrosting the truck well wouldn’t you know it my dinosaur casted a pretty scary shadow on the truck which just so happened to catch me off guard and scared the heck out of me!!! I’m now laughing about it but wasn’t this morning. Guess I shouldn’t of watched the new Jurassic Park trailer because I thought they really were here!

Besides this I added some pictures of where we tied in our new main to the old water main. Big upgrades going in!!!

Can anyone guess what we did this week? ❄️ I’m sure you saw us at some point snow plowing!!! Crazy weather as you can see in the first picture was the first night windshield was freezing up as we were pushing snow. Finally we caught a break after long hours in the trucks. The sun finally showed its self helping us a bunch allowing us to get roads in a lot better shape. After all those long hours had to go home, and build a snowman ⛄️ let’s see them snow man pictures in the comments.

02/01/2022

Recent days have reminded us that winter is coming! When below freezing temperatures are sustained over a few days, water pipes and meters that are close to cold air may freeze. Anderson Water Utilities urges residents to take steps to prevent water pipes and meters from freezing. Frozen water meters and water pipes can stop water service and may be expensive to repair or replace. Property owners are responsible for protecting both water pipes and the water meter from damage. Preventing pipes and the meter from freezing is easier than trying to thaw them once they are frozen. As cold weather has now invaded the Anderson area, please help the utility in protecting your meters and pipes by doing the following.
1. Protect your meter. Please make sure all outdoor meter’s lids are not broken or missing, let the utility know if a replacement lid is needed. At the onset of cold weather, it is a good idea to protect your meter from freezing by covering the meter lid with some type of insulation. Unopen bags of mulch, potting soil makes good insulation or let any snow that falls cover the meter since snow acts as insulation. Remember that while Anderson owns the water meter, the water customer is responsible for protecting it. If the water meter is broken because of freezing or other damage, City of Anderson will charge the customer for the meter’s replacement.

2. Know the location of your property shut-off valve. In the event your property experiences a water leak, knowing the location of your shut-off valve could save you money on water and damage repairs. Make sure everyone in your home knows where the main water shut-off valve is located so you can turn off the water in an emergency. When you locate the valve, mark it with an identification tag. The valve is typically located where the water line enters the home. This could be in the basement, crawlspace, or utility closet. (Note: This is different from the shut-off valve in your meter box.)

3. Insulate water pipes in unheated areas. When temperatures drop below 32 degrees, exposed water pipes can quickly become an owner’s worst nightmare. To reduce the likelihood of freezing, protect exposed pipes by wrapping them with heat tape, pre-molded foam rubber sleeves or fiberglass insulation, available at hardware stores.

4. Disconnect and drain the garden hose connection. This will help prevent outside faucets and pipes from freezing, leaking, or breaking. Make sure to drain and store any garden hoses, too — they can freeze and split.

5. If you have pipes that are vulnerable to freezing, allow a trickle of water to drip at night from an indoor faucet, preferably one along an exterior wall or farthest from where the water service connects with the main water line. During extremely cold periods, this trickle should be the size of a pencil point. Open cabinet doors to expose pipes to warmer room temperatures to help keep them from freezing.

6. Close garage doors completely since most water supply lines are in the garage.

7. Winterize your irrigation system.

Next week plan, some concrete work along with hooking up the new section of water main just got to wait for parts to tie it altogether. More pictures to come next week!
