Pennsylvania Republicans should be very careful before supporting property tax elimination.
Right now, our local schools are funded locally. That means our communities still have a voice and some level of control over where the money goes. Once Harrisburg takes over school funding completely, rural counties will be at the mercy of state politicians from Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
Do we really trust the state government to fairly fund small-town and rural schools year after year? Or will our tax dollars get redirected to the big cities while our schools fight for scraps?
Eliminating property taxes sounds good in a campaign slogan, but it comes with a dangerous tradeoff: more power for Harrisburg, less local control, and more dependence on state bureaucrats.
Republicans have always believed government closest to the people works best. Handing total control of school funding to the state goes against that principle.
Protect local control. Protect rural schools. Think twice before giving Harrisburg the keys.
