The swimming area at Wekiwa Springs sits right at the spring head, where the water is at its clearest and its coldest. You step off the dock and the Florida summer just stops.

It is 72 degrees in there while the rest of Central Florida is running at 95. People swim here in January, too. The spring does not take seasons off.

Park reservations are required through September 1, so plan ahead before your visit.

You are never the only one out there on the Wekiva River.

The alligators claim the sunny banks in the morning. The herons stand absolutely still in the shallows like they are made of stone. The otters, if you are lucky, will swim alongside your kayak for a full minute before deciding you are boring and disappearing under the surface.

Here is what the weekday regulars at Wekiwa know.

The parking lot is half empty before 9am. The launch is calm. The wildlife is still on the banks because no one has come through to disturb it yet. The water is as clear and cool as it will be all week.

While everyone waits for the weekend, the river is yours on a Monday morning.

August at Wekiwa Springs Adventures still has 72-degree water, six miles of river, and every kayak, canoe, and paddleboard rental we run all summer.

The only thing that changes is the crowd, and it starts to thin out by mid-August.

If July got away from you, August is actually the better month. Quieter water. Cooler mornings. Same river.

Stand-up paddleboards are available for rent at Wekiwa Springs Adventures, and the Wekiva River is one of the better places in Central Florida to use one.

The water is 72 degrees, clear enough to see the bottom, and the current is gentle enough that you can balance, explore, and stop whenever something catches your attention.

If you're planning a full-day trip to Wekiwa Springs Adventures, here is what the regulars bring.

A dry bag for your phone and keys. Water shoes or sandals with a strap so they don't float away. Sunscreen applied before you get in the kayak. Plenty of water. Sunglasses with a strap. A small cooler if you want snacks on the river.

The paddle, the life jacket, and the boat are all provided with your rental. Everything else is on this list.
