Appomattox Lions Club

Appomattox Lions Club The Appomattox Lions Club has been an active non-profit civic organization in our community for more than 75 years.

Permanently closed.

Historically, a primary focus of Lions Clubs has been health conservation, specifically sight and hearing. This effort was initiated by a challenge from Helen Keller to the Lions in the early 20th Century. Our club is active in several projects which are consistent with this focus, along with many other community projects.

Leo Club Objective

Leo Club Objective
To provide the youth of our Community with an opportunity for their development, individually and collectively. Being responsible members of the local, national and international communities, while at the same time the satisfaction received from service to people of their community.
LEO – “Leadership” “Experience” “Opportunity”
Leadership – Develop skills as a project organizer, time manager and team leader.
Experience – Learn how teamwork, cooperation and collaboration can bring exciting changes to your community and the world.
Opportunity – Make friends and feel the rewards of community service and fellowship.
LEO Clubs provide young people to not only to be part of a World Wide Organization, but at the same time an excellent opportunity to build their resumes for Colleges, Universities, and future employers, while serving our community.
The SGA (Student Government Association) at ACA will provide the reception food and refreshments. LIONS have a motto “WE SERVE”. On Thursday, April 14th the Appomattox Lions Club had the privilege of honoring the First Responders of our community that both “PROTECT and SERVE”. They can be depended on with Fighting Crimes, Fires, Medical Emergencies, Accidents, and as recently witnessed Natural Disasters. In just a small way it is important to show our First Responders that their community appreciates the great work each organization does in serving our communities.
Everyone enjoyed a great Dinner and fellowship with the following great organizations:
Appomattox Fire Department
Appomattox Rescue Squad
Appomattox Sheriff’s Department
Concord Fire Department
Concord Rescue Squad
Pamplin Fire Department
Red House Fire Department
Virginia State Police
The Lions were also privileged to give a $300 donation to each of these great organizations to assist with their organizations or their outreach programs.
Also assisting with this great event was the Appomattox Christian Academy who is sponsoring our new LEO Club, along with some of the new LEO’s. They provided individual Gifts and Place Mats for Eighty-Four (84) people in attendance.
Please join the Lions, and take a moment to say “THANK YOU” to each First Responder you may know or meet in the future. They make a difference in our lives everyday.

Cindy Brooks Capps and Jay Parker with the YMCA of Central Virginia's Summer Learning Loss Prevention (SLLP) program accepted the Appomattox Lions Club’s donation of $1400 at a recent meeting at the Appomattox Community Center on Thursday 3/10/16. The program, which serves Appomattox students for 6 weeks during the summer, is the Y's nationally recognized literacy program that serves in improving the reading proficiency of 1st through 3rd graders who are reading below grade level. The purpose of SLLP is to provide the necessary additional support that these students need to be proficient in reading by the end of third grade. This donation will enable a child the opportunity to attend when their family is unable to afford the camp.
Mary Watson with the After Prom Party Committee also received the Club’s donation of $300 to support the After Prom Party. The After Prom Party is an event to allow our young people of Appomattox the opportunity to celebrate their High School accomplishments in an organized safe environment.
Lion Denzil VanSweearingen, Appomattox Lions Club President was honored to present these donations to support both these great programs. Your Appomattox Lions Club believes that our young people are our future. Every young person in our community deserves every opportunity to feel safe and successful in their lives.

Your Appomattox Lions Club is now in the process of establishing the Appomattox Leo Club. The Leo Club is made up of young people from the age of 13 through 18. This enables our young people to learn the importance of serving others, while at the same time supporting their community. The club also will allow them to show Universities and Colleges that they have developed organizational and leadership skills required to succeed in life. Leo Clubs are run by the young people in the club with the guidance of Lions. They nominate and vote for their own Club's President, Treasurer, Secretary, Committee Chairs, and other Officers of their club. If you are a young person between 13 through 18 please contact us via the Appomattox Lions Club page or contact us at [email protected]. You can also call "Lion Van" at 434-941-1163 for additional information. Parents and Grandparents please encourage the young people in your family to join. We must work together to ensure we give our young people the tools to be successful adults. Our young people are our future, and can make a difference.

Your Appomattox Lions Club has received a large substantial Grant from the “Virginia Lions Disaster Relief Fund” to aid with our communities disaster recovery. The club attended a meeting today at the Evergreen Ruritan Club in Evergreen, VA. This meeting enabled our club the ability to provide information on how Lions can help the people that were directly impacted, while at the same time obtain the names of additional families needing help. We are looking to help with the replacement of such things as Household Appliances, Furniture, Eyeglasses, Hearing Aids, and the Clothing needs for Children. This is just one way for Lions come together and live up to our motto “We Serve”.

Your Appomattox Lions Club is in the process of obtaining a ”Grant” from Lions International to aid in the recovery from the disaster that struck Appomattox County on Wednesday, Feb 24th. The Grant will hopefully aid in a small way to help our neighbors that were directly impacted by loss of their homes due to the horrific tornado that struck Appomattox County. We are reaching out to all our friends on Facebook to assist us with having these families in need contact Appomattox Lions Club.
How can you help? Please have these impacted families contact us on this page - AppomattoxLionsClub, or email us @ [email protected] or [email protected]. Our Lions motto is “WE SERVE” , and now is the time that we need your help in serving these families that need “HELP”.
