Using Trails and Outdoor Spaces Safely in the Wake of COVID-19

Some great advice from Rails-to-Trails Conservancy on the safe use of trails at this time. Great quote from Gabriel Avila-Mooney, King County Parks in Washington. Spot on! “When you get out to a trailhead and it’s packed—don’t go on it. If you are out there, and you realize you are not able to maintain that safe social distance of 6 feet, turn around. If you start to feel unsafe at any point, turn back.” https://bit.ly/39kxBML

Spotted recently by a colleague: a handmade sign for #WalkingWednesday created by kids. It suggests that people walk or take public transit to protect the environment. "If you are scared of walking alone you can walk with a buddy or in a group," it says. We love that schoolchildren were being thoughtful and took the time to do this. This Wednesday, we can still walk together even if we have to be physically apart.

Drivers yield less to people walking if they’re in expensive cars, or maybe to people of color

We enjoyed participating in Alice Fleet West Elementary, Arlington, Virginia's first walking school bus last week! More lanes on I-95 won’t fix Virginia’s traffic woes, VDOT says

Interesting Virginia Department of Transportation study on easing congestion on I-95. The solution? It's not adding more lanes, but encouraging more carpooling and use of public transit. The study also recommends identifying ways to make biking and walking easier for local trips. https://bit.ly/3bwUCyf

If you want to ease congestion and improve travel times on Interstate 95, widening the roads won’t do the trick.

Any chance we can get the vending machines at Bluemont Park tennis courts restocked? I was running a 16 miler yesterday on the Arlington Loop and badly needed some fuel/ electrolytes, but all the Gatorade was sold out 😫Thanks.
See my post on April 6 about walking around Arlington
This walking map effort is really terrific!
I’ve identified four highly dangerous crosswalks in and around The Village at Shirlington in South Arlington. This area is crucial to accessing and connecting the Washington and Old Dominion Bike Trail, Four Mile RunTrail, Jennie Dean Park, Shirlington Dog Park, The Village at Shirlington and the Nauck Community. At each marked point, there are various and visible pedestrian crossing signs. Nonetheless, motorists continue to speed, dangerously encroach on pedestrians in these crosswalks, physically block crosswalks, and do not yield the right of way to the pedestrians and cyclists as Virginia Law requires.
Southgate Road at Columbia Pike intersection has had a trailer parked on the sidewalk since before summer 2016—18 months. Is it abandoned? Who owns it? It is inconsiderate and inconvenient for pedestrians and forces bikes into the road. There is a parking lot nearby.
