America’s face-mask culture is changing, and their meaning changes too

Thoughtful article from National Geographic on the culture of mask-wearing in public. "Masks are becoming a more and more common sight in communities across North America. Often, wearers use them to signal solidarity with those around them. The message is: 'I'm protecting you, you're protecting me, I can feel safe.'" https://on.natgeo.com/3bMAIzc

As the team at WalkVirginia reminded us today, we're in the midst of #NationalWalkingWeek and #ArlingtonWalkingWeek. To celebrate, they'd asked people to post pictures of their favorite walks from 2019. We're remembering our Opening Day for Trails event on the W&OD Trail last April. We partnered with several other organizations to pick up litter and trash along a half-mile of the trail. It was a beautiful spring day. Lots of people came to help and we all had a great time. Hopefully we can do it again next year!

Our Story

Hi! We’re WalkArlington. We think everyone deserves to get around at any age and ability easily and comfortably—where the grocery store is just steps away, the streets support human activity, and there are spaces for community.

If that sounds appealing to you, you’re in the right place. Our mission is to get more people walking, more of the time, in a more walkable environment in Arlington County, Virginia.

On our website you can find our walking tours and events, updates about walking projects around the County, self-guided walking route maps, and resources to support better walking in Arlington.

We are a part of the Arlington County Commuter Services (ACCS) bureau, which serves people who live, work, or play in Arlington by providing programs and services to make it easier to get around without a car.

Any chance we can get the vending machines at Bluemont Park tennis courts restocked? I was running a 16 miler yesterday on the Arlington Loop and badly needed some fuel/ electrolytes, but all the Gatorade was sold out 😫Thanks.
See my post on April 6 about walking around Arlington
This walking map effort is really terrific!
I’ve identified four highly dangerous crosswalks in and around The Village at Shirlington in South Arlington. This area is crucial to accessing and connecting the Washington and Old Dominion Bike Trail, Four Mile RunTrail, Jennie Dean Park, Shirlington Dog Park, The Village at Shirlington and the Nauck Community. At each marked point, there are various and visible pedestrian crossing signs. Nonetheless, motorists continue to speed, dangerously encroach on pedestrians in these crosswalks, physically block crosswalks, and do not yield the right of way to the pedestrians and cyclists as Virginia Law requires.
Southgate Road at Columbia Pike intersection has had a trailer parked on the sidewalk since before summer 2016—18 months. Is it abandoned? Who owns it? It is inconsiderate and inconvenient for pedestrians and forces bikes into the road. There is a parking lot nearby.
