Guardian of the Week – LCDR Joe Rodriguez
In Memoriam to Lt. Cmdr. Joe Rodriguez, a legendary Guardian and the namesake for the DOG's Tactical Operator of the Year Award.
LCDR Joe Rodriguez, U.S. Coast Guard (retired), is not your average Guardian. Shortly after his retirement in 2006, LCDR Rodriguez was diagnosed with an inoperable, malignant brain tumor. Today, this valiant warrior is engaged in the toughest battle of his life.

Coasties join exercise amid Korea tensions
Port Security Unit 313, a reserve unit out of Everett, Wash., is participating in Foal Eagle 2013, a U.S.-South Korea training effort that brings together about 10,000 U.S. and South Korean military personnel.
As tensions on the Korean Peninsula rise, the military is carrying out a major tactical exercise there — and a Coast Guard unit is taking part.

LTJG Alicia Flanagan, MSST Boston deployable team leader, was recognized as Shipmate of the week for her leadership of the MSST Boston/NY team that helped secure Boston Harbor following the marathon bombing.
On Monday, April 15, 2013, the City of Boston was viciously attacked when two bombs exploded near the Boston Marathon finish line. World sea piracy down 35 percent in first quarter
Coast Guard advanced interdiction teams contributed to reducing world piracy by 35% in the first quarter of 2013.
World sea piracy fell 35 percent from a year ago in the first quarter of 2013, with the spotlight shifting to West Africa as navies helped keep pirates away from Somalia, an international maritime watchdog said Monday.

PO1 Derek Shay named Active Duty Enlisted Person of the Year
BZ YN1 Stepheni Norton, of PSU 311, for being named the Eleventh Coast Guard District's Reserve Enlisted Person of the Year. Norton provided “care suitcases” with food and supplies for homeless veterans in Southern California and developed a website to announce charity and non-profit events.
