Preparing for a Government Shutdown

While Congress passed a continuing resolution to keep the federal government running through November 17, Air Force Aid Society is already experiencing an uptick in calls and online inquiries from Airmen, Guardians, and their families who are concerned about the financial impacts.

Please review the Government Shutdown FAQs on our website https://bit.ly/3t8lWQI and check our social media pages for more frequent updates on our preparations. If you’re able to help, please consider donating to the Air Force Aid Society. Your contributions go a long way in supporting our Air Force and Space Force communities when they need us most https://bit.ly/2ZGAoRC.

We'll continue to provide updates and additional resources as the situation develops. Together, we can overcome any challenges that come our way.

Teammates - Congress has passed a continuing resolution (CR) to ensure the government stays open for the next 45 days. While this is not the most ideal outcome we could hoped for, it is one that will ensure our Airmen, and families continue to receive pay and benefits as Congress works to pass a defense spending bill.

What this means is that the federal government will not shutdown at midnight. Instead a CR allows for partial funding of the government and gives the congress until 17 Nov 23 to pass a budget.

While this comes as a relief to many, it’s still important to stay connected...check on each other...know the support & resources available, and stay dialed in with your chains of command.

Wingmen - we remain hopeful that a government shutdown will be averted. Regardless, it's important to keep the lines of communication open, and to provide our Airmen and families with the information they need.

While many things are still uncertain, you can expect we'll share information as we get it. Here's what we know at this time:

✅ End-of-month (September) paychecks won't be impacted...

✅ Some financial institutions, and the Air Force Aid Society, have agreed to provide low/no interest loans and/or support

✅ Impacts to childcare (CDC, Before/After Care, Youth Centers) are expected...your installation will have more specific guidance

✅ Military OneSource call center and website, Spouse Education and Career Opportunities career center, and MFLC contracts are not impacted

✅ Commissaries are not impacted and will remain open

✅ All DoDEA schools will be in-session, minus all after school extracurricular activities and sports

There will undoubtedly be more impacts and unique situations that arise.

Stay engaged with your chains of command and let them know of any hardships this may cause. This is important! They can't help what they don't know.

And lastly, stay connected to one another. I remember the uncertainty I felt during the shutdowns throughout my career…and what helped most was the support and communication by my leaders, and from others who have experienced this in the past.

Remember, there are resources to help ease lapses in benefits... we will get through this...together!
