The Cyber 9/12 Strategy Challenge hosted by the Atlantic Council is a one-of-a-kind cyber competition. It provides students from across the globe and academic disciplines with a deeper understanding of the policy and strategy challenges associated with managing a #cybercrisis. This weekend, IDS Solutions Architect, Amanda Lockwood, will join other industry cyber professionals as a judge.

“This competition is an extremely important policy and strategy exercise,” said Amanda. “Whether exercises are table top like this competition or virtual like IDS’s proprietary information operations and cyber warfare training environment, SMEIR, they serve a critical function in solving problems before they happen. The Cyber 9/12 Challenge is a great opportunity to train future cyber leaders.” Learn more at https://www.atlanticcouncil.org/programs/scowcroft-center-for-strategy-and-security/cyber-statecraft-initiative/cyber-912/

Introducing Third Annual Shahla Hammond Scholarship Recipient – Alexandra Johnson

Shahla Hammond was an Afghanistan subject matter expert (SME) for IDS. Through her stories, wisdom, and personal human touch, Shahla taught and touched the lives of thousands of US Marines, soldiers, diplomats, and aid workers. Adored by all who had the opportunity to work with her, Shahla was a friendly and nurturing team member and mentor to colleagues. Shahla’s positive energy and good nature made her an effective counselor and great IDS ambassador.

In honor of Shahla Hammond, IDS’s President and CEO, Nick Dowling, established the Shahla Hammond Scholarship in 2018 to recognize rising #interns who embody her spirit and values. This annual #scholarship is awarded to assist with tuition and fees for higher education.

IDS’s summer internship program focuses on teaching the business side of government contracting by providing interns hands-on experience with various departments.

2020 Shahla Hammond Scholarship Recipient – Alexandra Johnson

Alexandra (Ali) Johnson was IDS’s proposals intern for the spring and summer while she completed the Elliott School’s M.A. in International Affairs program at George Washington University. Ali grew up in Colorado and moved to Washington, DC after graduating from the University of Colorado Boulder. She recently accepted a position as a proposal associate and is excited about her future with IDS. Although the internship program took place during the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, IDS ensured that Ali could receive the most meaningful experience about the business aspect of government contracting.

To say Ali is an enthusiastic team player is an understatement. She is always ready to help, learn, and never sits idle. Ali exudes friendliness and professionalism in her interactions and never fails to impress. She also takes great interest in IDS’s diverse work. Ali not only embodies Shahla’s spirit, but also IDS’s core values: integrity, excellence, innovation, and respect. IDS is proud to name her the third recipient of the Shahla Hammond Scholarship. Please join us in congratulating Ali.

Soaring food prices. Increasing #foodsecurity. Growing numbers of people being forced into poverty. #COVID-19’s impacts are being felt across the globe and putting serious strains on organizations trying to help like @USAID and @WorldFoodProgramme. Already their partner, IDS is expanding its humanitarian efforts to lift people out of poverty. We are utilizing our expertise in solving complex problems in the most difficult environments to oversee the distribution of aid in several provinces in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan and its largest city.

In the month of June, we oversaw 140 missions to distribute food and financial aid for regions in desperate need. This responsibility involved coordinating meetings among local leaders of two Afghanistan provinces, Parwan and Takhar, as well as with our partners from USAID and the World Food Programme. In a single mission, we oversaw the distribution of monetary aid to 2,000+ people in Kabul in the first half of June.

In addition, we are educating and training aid recipients on COVID-19 safety precautions such as social distancing and personal protective equipment—all while maintaining the safety of our employees carrying out these vital missions.

“SMEIR (Social Media Environment Internet Replication) system, we can do IO campaigns, open source scraping….all social media and internet…instead of having 1,000 people typing and putting stuff in, we just turn this on and it populates all of that. We can tailor the messages and triggers, so a unit can exploit that.” Nicholas Marchuk

Additionally, IDS operates and maintains the MUTC cyber range and agrees that it is, "legit....around the world, the best, urban training site."

IDS CEO Nick Dowling and former FEMA Chief of Staff Nat Fogg talk at the 2020 Champlain Institute about how the US government responds to disasters, with particular focus on what we have done right and wrong with COVID-19.

“One of the most important things in a national emergency such as this is to have strong leadership and communications with the American public to make them feel like things are going to be okay….I would have liked to have seen, and like to continue to see, the Federal government get more involved in having an alignment in communication of guidelines to states about reopening of the economy and reopening of schools.” Nat Fogg

COVID-19 Actions and Initiatives

Can America reopen safely from the novel #coronavirus?

Help IDS and Clear Outcomes find out by calculating your COVID-19 Safety Score.

Taking this quiz every week or two will help us track behavior and see how those behaviors link to infection rates as America starts to reopen.

You will not only be helping track your own safety, you'll be helping us learn what behaviors are key to staying safe.

As a baseline, we've commissioned three national surveys on behavior (with safety scores) and you can read about those results here: https://www.idsinternational.com/assessments-monitoring/covid-19-actions-and-initiatives

Overall, Americans are already starting to go out more and meet more people, but they are wearing masks, washing hands, and disinfecting surfaces. Will it be enough?

How Data About Americans’ Behavior Can Help Us to Safely Reopen the Economy - The Rockefeller Foundation

Pleased to have collaborated with The Rockefeller Foundation and Clear Outcomes on this important thought piece on how we can use data to make decisions and ensure safety.

The Rockefeller Foundation and other experts have called for widespread testing and contact tracing to get Americans back to work more safely.

Data and evaluative thinking, as being done by IDS International and Clear Outcomes, could also be an essential approach to assessing what comes next.

In the past few weeks, data culled from various sources and through different methods have given insights about the Covid-19 pandemic and how it is
