We love at-home activities that demonstrate the intricate wonders of nature and science! This salt crystal growing experiment is the perfect fall activity. You will need water, salt, leaves, string, a pot, glass jars, and skewers. Try it out and show us your #NaturallyFun results!

Instructions:
Fill a saucepan with enough water to fill your jars, and boil the water on high heat. While the water comes to a boil, tie string around the stem of each of your leaves and then tie the other end of the string to a skewer (popsicle sticks, toothpicks, pencils, or just about any other similar items will work as skewers). Repeat for each leaf you want to crystalize. Use the skewers to suspend the leaves over the jars.

Once your water boils, add enough salt to create a sheet of salt crystals across the surface of the water. Turn off the heat and continue to add salt until it does not dissolve. Then pour the salt water into the jars, fully submerging the leaves. Wait 3-7 days for crystals to form. The longer you wait, the more crystals will form on the leaves.

Once crystals have formed, remove the leaves from the water and dry gently with a paper towel. When the crystals are dry, examine them with a magnifying glass to learn about salt, ionic bonds, and crystal formations!

As of today, Arlington Parks and Recreation's beloved Hugh Smith Recreation Center has closed its doors to the public after serving as a cherished pillar in the East Arlington community for over 50 years.

Hugh Smith Indoor Pool will close this Saturday, October 10, so there's still time for one last swim! Though the pool is operating at 75% capacity, there are still some open time slots for those who would like to schedule a lap swim or water walking/jogging session. You can call Hugh Smith Recreation Center and Indoor Pool at 817-275-1351 to register for an hour-long water fitness session between 8:00am-3:15pm, and 6:15-8:30pm.

Stay tuned this week as we highlight some of our favorite memories from Hugh Smith Recreation Center and Indoor Pool and say farewell to this Arlington staple! As this chapter closes, we look forward to new beginnings on the horizon as excitement grows for the new East Library and Recreation Center. Sneak peeks coming soon!

How has Arlington Parks and Recreation positively impacted your life during the pandemic? We would love to hear your story! Here's how one visitor has been staying active and connected through Tai Chi classes:

"It’s been very important because there have been days where, if it weren’t for this rec center, there would be absolutely nothing I could go do outside of my house. This place really has given me an outlet and a way to get out, and the people that work here at Elzie Odom Athletic Center are super friendly. This is ultra-important to the community: for children, for adults, for senior citizens. There’s something for everyone here." - Judy P., Tai Chi participant
