In honor of Black History Month, we'd like to recognize Elzie Odom and his profound impact on the City of Arlington. Elzie Odom was elected mayor of Arlington on May 3, 1997. In 1990, he became the first African-American to be elected to the Arlington City Council.
As a member of the Council, Odom worked on redistricting, transportation and mobility issues as well as economic development initiatives to keep the Texas Rangers Baseball Club and the General Motors Automobile Assembly Plant in Arlington.
During his three terms as mayor, Odom led continued efforts to ensure better streets for Arlington residents. Odom worked to increase diversity on city boards and commissions, and was a champion for Arlington youth.
After his retirement, Odom continued his involvement in the Arlington community through service on many boards and committees. Elzie Odom Athletic Center opened in 1999, bearing his name.
