United Way of the Virginia Peninsula

United Way of the Virginia Peninsula United Way believes we can achieve more together than any of us could on our own. We unite people, o Most important, United Way gets results.

United Way of the Virginia Peninsula’s Community Assistance Network (CAN) serves those facing poverty related crises in: Gloucester County, Hampton, James City County, Mathews County, Newport News, New Kent, Poquoson, Williamsburg, and York County. People usually think of United Way as a fundraising organization—but that's just part of what we do. Our years of experience tells us the best way to h

elp those who need us most is to focus on the root causes of our community's most critical issues. So we not only develop resources, we invest them in nonprofit agencies that lift our neighbors in need out of poverty. United Way brings people together from all over the community-government, business, faith groups, nonprofits, and citizens-to identify and tackle the complex issues that keep individuals and families in the cycle of poverty. We build partnerships with other funders, municipalities, and community organizations, as well, because it takes the whole community to make this work. United Way makes sure the agencies we fund are getting the results our community needs. Through evaluations that measure Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), United Way can track progress and ensure our donors that their money is invested in our community’s most impactful resources that help our neighbors in need overcome the cycle of poverty.

Today is National Nonprofit Day, and we're celebrating the organizations and people who show up every day to make our community stronger. 💙

From providing essential resources to supporting children and families, local nonprofits are doing important work across the Virginia Peninsula.

We’re grateful for the nonprofit partners, volunteers, staff, and supporters who turn care into action and help our neighbors move forward.

To every nonprofit making a difference here on the Peninsula: thank you for showing up. We see you, we appreciate you, and we’re proud to work alongside you.

Jeanette's story reflects a reality many hardworking families know all too well. Hard work should be enough. For many ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) families, it isn't.

On the Virginia Peninsula, 39% of households are living in poverty or are ALICE, earning too much to qualify for many assistance programs, yet still struggling to afford basic needs. Jeanette's story reminds us that financial hardship doesn't always look the way people expect.

Behind the numbers are hardworking neighbors doing everything they can to get ahead, while rising costs and unexpected expenses keep stability just out of reach. That's why United Way is working alongside our community to expand access to resources, remove barriers, and create pathways to financial stability.

Today is International Youth Day! 💙

Every young person deserves the chance to learn, grow, feel supported, and imagine a future full of possibilities.

Through initiatives like the Peninsula Youth Collaborative and Champions for Children, our community comes together to support young people and create opportunities for them to thrive.

Because supporting kids and teens isn't just about today. It's about building a stronger community for tomorrow.

Let's keep showing up for the next generation. https://bit.ly/40SXLUu

🎉Welcome Our Certified Partner Agencies!

Earlier this year, we announced that, for the first time in 10 years, we reopened applications for Certified Partner Agencies. Today, we're excited to welcome 13 newly certified partner agencies to our network of local nonprofits making a difference across the Virginia Peninsula, bringing our total network to 49 Certified Partner Agencies.

This milestone is about more than growth. It strengthens collaboration, accountability, and collective impact across our region. Together, our Certified Partner Agencies are advancing our impact areas of Healthy Community, Youth Opportunity, Financial Security, and Community Resiliency, creating more opportunities for ALICE households and families facing financial hardship to thrive.

We are grateful to all of our Certified Partner Agencies for their unwavering commitment to serving our community. Together, we're building a stronger, more connected network of support to meet today's challenges and create lasting change for tomorrow.

💙 Join us in welcoming these incredible organizations!

🎉 Community Voices. Creating Lasting Change Together.

Housing stability starts with community. When neighbors help neighbors, lives are changed, families find stability, and communities grow stronger.

Thank you Mayor Phillip Jones for helping us celebrate CAN's 5th anniversary and recognizing the impact made possible through partnership, compassion, and shared purpose. The more than 23,000 neighbors connected to assistance over the past five years represent more than numbers. They represent families supported, challenges overcome, and opportunities created across the Peninsula.

💙 We're honored to stand alongside the partners, leaders, volunteers, donors, and supporters who make this mission possible. Your commitment makes a lasting impact on the families and individuals we serve.

As we continue celebrating CAN's 5-year anniversary, we look forward to sharing more stories, milestones, and voices that reflect our impact all year long.

🎉 Voices of Support: Celebrating 5 Years of Our Community Assistance Network🎉
While our official 5th anniversary was July 1, we're continuing the celebration by sharing messages from leaders who have seen CAN's impact across the Peninsula. We're proud to begin the series with a special anniversary message from Senator Tim Kaine, who recognized CAN's remarkable milestone of helping more than 22,000 neighbors through over $8 million in community assistance over the past five years.

As we celebrate this milestone, we're reflecting on CAN's impact over the last five years and the lives being changed every day through connections to critical resources. These achievements are possible because of our partners, donors, volunteers, and community members who believe everyone deserves access to the support they need to thrive.
