You may have heard the expression "Gay is good." But what do you know about Frank Kameny, the pioneering LGBTQ+ activist who coined the phrase?

Franklin E. Kameny became a chief strategist for the Gay Rights Movement after being fired from his job in the federal government because he was gay. He was dismissed from his job as an astronomer for the Army Map Service in 1957 based on a policy that justified firing employees for “sexual perversion.” Kameny challenged the dismissal all the way to the Supreme Court - the first known civil rights claim based on sexual orientation in a U.S. court. The case propelled Kameny to become one of the most influential LGBTQ+ activists of the 20th century. In 1961, Kameny co-founded the Mattachine Society of Washington and focused on challenging laws and policies that marginalized the LGBTQ+ community. With other activists including Barbara Gittings, Kameny helped successfully lobby the American Psychiatric Association to overturn its classification of homosexuality as a mental illness and for the removal of the federal government’s ban on gay and lesbian employees. Kameny was buried at Washington, D.C.’s Congressional Cemetery, where his grave is marked with a military headstone and a marker inscribed with the slogan he coined: “Gay is Good.”

WE WON! LGBTQ Floridians are protected from discrimination under the law! The Florida Commission on Human Relations has announced it will implement the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Bostock and investigate claims of anti-LGBTQ discrimination. That means any LGBTQ person who experiences discrimination has the right to pursue justice - no matter where they live in Florida. This is a total victory for the LGBTQ community. Love wins! Caregivers are a critical, and often under-appreciated part of our society. For LGBT elders, who are less likely than heterosexual, cis-gender peers to be married or have children of their own, these caregivers are often friends and chosen family. How can you show your appreciation and help support a caregiver this #NationalFamilyCaregiversMonth?

It is with deep sadness that we must share the loss of Lois Johnson. She passed away quietly on Saturday evening after a brief illness.

Many here know Lois from our film sitting side-by-side with her wife, Sheri (Claire) Barden. But many of us aren’t aware of how many lives she touched (and sometimes saved) through her activism and unflinching pride in being herself.

She was a confidant to many and a lifeline for others. To us, she was the big sister we turned to for encouragement as she bravely allowed us to share her story around the world.

But this film could only tell a small portion of how much there was to this remarkable person. Lois led an incredibly full life in fields ranging from journalism to real estate. Her activism, especially her 15 years of service as president of Boston’s Daughters of Bilitis, helped clear the way for hundreds of women to live openly as themselves in a safer world. At the time of her passing she was still actively working on a book about the history of the Daughters of Bilitis.

Her smile was a trademark and her laugh always changed your spirits. Lois will be remembered most for her love and her life with her wife Sheri who survives her.

Arrangements are still underway and we will keep everyone posted as we learn details.
