Jamie Brewer made history last week as the first model with Down syndrome to walk the runway during New York Fashion Week! The American actress best known for her TV role on American Horror Story wore an original design by Carrie Hammer as part of Hammer’s "Role Models Not Runway Models" campaign. The campaign is dedicated to featuring a diverse array of role models in her runway shows and marketing.

Hammer launched her "Role Models Not Runway Models" campaign last year with Danielle Sheypuk, a psychologist and winner of Ms. Wheelchair NY 2012, who became the first person in a wheelchair to ever model at Fashion Week. This year, she was inspired to include Brewer in her show after receiving an e-mail from Katie Driscoll, founder of Changing the Face of Beauty, a non-profit that advocates for including people with disabilities in advertising. Driscoll’s daughter Grace has Down syndrome and she asked Hammer to consider including a role model for Grace in this year’s show. Hammer decided that "[Brewer] was an obvious choice. She's a TV star... and she's already kind of a fashion icon — she walks red carpets all the time.”

Brewer, who has also been an activist for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities since her teens, was thrilled to participate. She told the Today show, “Young girls and even young women … [see me] and say ‘hey, if she can do it so can I.’ It’s a true inspiration being a role model for any young women to [encourage them] in being who they are and showing who they are.” Hammer's dress for Brewer was inspired by her character on American Horror Story and was designed to show off the beauty of Brewer’s proportions.

Hammer also makes a point of seeking out women in diverse careers to model for her, from CEOs to authors. Other women who walked the runway for Hammer this year included Shiza Shahid, co-founder of the Malala Fund, and Kimberly Bryant, founder of Black Girls Code. She hopes that her choices of models change the way young women think about fashion and beauty. “I think it's expanding the definition of beauty from purely skin deep towards passion, purpose and accomplishments,” she explained. “When I think it can't get any better, it gets 10 times better. The women were so happy, and that's the most important thing to me."
