Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC) received zoning approval from Arlington County for the second phase of our redevelopment at The Terraces at Arlington View community. The plan will replace 37 apartments on the west side of South Rolfe Street with 78 new apartments. The project will more than double the homes and further our revitalization work in this community.

This comes less than a year after AHC's grand opening of The Terraces at Arlington View (East), a $40.8 million redevelopment that includes 77 affordable apartments.

This week, the Maryland Affordable Housing Coalition held its virtual 2024 Housing Day followed by in-person legislative meetings in Annapolis. We loved learning about important Maryland legislative initiatives that will support affordable housing.

Paul Bernard, AHC President & CEO, Jennifer Endo, AHC Vice President of Community Relations/Chief of Staff, and Mary Claire Davis, AHC Vice President of Real Estate Development, visited Maryland's capital to meet with legislators and discuss the importance of prioritizing equitable, accessible, and affordable housing.

We're excited to continue developing affordable homes and communities in Maryland!

AHC Board Member and resident Mildred Mack manages a free boutique at Charter House, a senior community in Maryland. Residents donate lightly used items that Mildred launders, irons, and prepares for the boutique. Resident Services staff identified a need at Barclay Greenmount, a Baltimore community, so the boutique donated extra coats to Barclay residents.

All items in the boutique are free and include clothing, household goods, furniture, and handicap accessible items like wheelchairs, crutches, and shower chairs.

We love to see communities working together to support each other!

Take a behind-the-scenes look at our tour of The Westerly, AHC's newest mixed-income and mixed-use community in D.C. Members of our staff and board visited the new building last month with our partners at Hoffman & Associates.

We walked through the completed common spaces, gym, outdoor courtyard, and affordable apartment homes. We also sported hard hats to view the areas still under construction.

Last month, the Animal Welfare League of Arlington hosted a workshop for pet owners at our Serrano community. Our residents learned more about local resources for their pets, like the spay/neuter voucher program, the pet pantry, low-cost vaccine and microchip programs, and affordable and emergency vet care services. They also received pet care packages for attending the workshop.

Thank you, Animal Welfare League of Arlington, for sharing these valuable resources with our residents and their furry friends!

David Brotman(left) and Cindy Rozón (right) with AHC and Sarah Selvaraj-Dsouza (middle) with Restonstrong, a volunteer-led community action group, recently completed an in-depth training program with the Supportive Housing Institute of Virginia.

Completing the program was a key milestone – it qualifies AHC and Restonstrong to receive a $300,000 grant to help fund the predevelopment efforts to create permanent supportive housing for chronically unhoused individuals in the Reston community.
