According to the Insurance Institute For Highway Safety, an average of approximately 118 individuals are killed in motor vehicle accidents on New Years Day each year, largely due to drunk driving. Despite the turn of the year being behind us, Marines are encouraged to avoid driving after consuming alcohol. The numbers speak for themselves -- driving impaired is likely to result in serious injury or death. Be safe and be smart.

As your Thanksgiving road trips draw closer, CMC(SD) urges Marines and their families to utilize the three P's of safe, successful travel:

PREPARE for the trip. Know your routes and plan accordingly.
PROTECT yourself and your loved ones. Wear seatbelts, have your vehicle properly maintained, and drive in a safe fashion.
PREVENT accidents and crashes. Practice safe driving by remaining alert, using your turn signals, and being aware of other drivers.

With the New Year well underway, CMC(SD) recognizes that -- between Marines participating in PT, and those with New Year Resolutions -- many of you will be hitting the pavement for some running in 2014. For the next several months, there's a good chance that the temperatures will be rather low, so you're encouraged to be smart when exercising in cold weather.
