Flotilla Northern Virginia, 054-25-12

Flotilla Northern Virginia, 054-25-12 As the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary unit on the upper Potomac River, safety, security, marine environmental protection, humanitarian assistance, homeland security and service to others are just a few of the things that we put first every day.

We are the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary on the upper Potomac River. Our operations and personnel focus on the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers surrounding our nation’s capital and run westward along the Interstate 66 and Dulles Airport corridors to the Shenandoah River. Established by Congress in 1939, the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is Semper Paratus (Always Ready). The Auxiliary operates in: • Safety and Security Patrols • Search and Rescue • Mass Causality or Disasters • Pollution Response & Patrols • Homeland Security • Recreational Boating Safety • Commerical Fishing and Vessel Exams • Platforms for Boarding Parties • Recruit for all service in the Coast Guard In addition to the above, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary operates in any mission as directed by the Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard or Secretary of Homeland Security.

Mission: The overarching mission of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is to contribute to the safety and security of our citizens, ports, and waterways. We balance our missions of Recreational Boating Safety and Coast Guard Support with Maritime Homeland Security and other challenges that emerge as a result of a post-9/11 era. In other words: we protect those on the sea, protect the Nation from threats delivered by the sea and protect the sea itself.

The Most Epic Things the United States Coast Guard Has Ever Done

Semper Paratus!

There are many sides to America's military forces. There's the side that most people know: big guns and explosions, stomping soldiers, and screaming jet fighters. But America's military complex is unique in the world, because it also takes a full-spectrum approach to saving lives. Yes, sometimes th....

On 17 December, Flotilla 25-12 members participated in area-wide Wreaths Across America activities. It was an icy morning but, along with the CG Auxiliary Club at Marymount University, we were able to make it to the Arlington National Cemetery and Balls Bluff National Battlefield events. Bravo Zulu to our members who braved the weather to honor veterans during the holidays.

5 things you didn't know about the Coast Guard on December 7th

The Coast Guard had quite a number of units and personnel who took part in the U.S. defense of Hawaii on that Sunday.

While most know that Coast Guard Cutter Taney took part in the battle of Dec. 7, 1941, with the attacks on Pearl Harbor, many don’t realize that the Coast Guard had quite a number of units and personnel who took part in the U.S. defense of Hawaii on that Sunday.

The CGC Storis (WMEC 38)

This day in history, 1992: CGC Storis became the cutter with the longest service in the Bering Sea, eclipsing the U.S. Revenue Cutter Bear which had held that distinction since 1929. Bear was decommissioned in 1929 after serving in the Bering Sea for 44 years and two months.

Based in Kodiak, Alaska, the USCGC Storis (WMEC 38) is the oldest commissioned Coast Guard cutter still in active service.

The Coast Guard celebrates its 226th birthday today. The Coast Guard is one of America's five armed forces and traces its founding to Aug. 4, 1790, when the first Congress authorized the construction of 10 vessels to enforce tariff and trade laws, prevent smuggling, and protect the collection of federal revenue.
