In honor of all the lives lost on that devastating day, and with gratitude to the first responders and service men and women who serve our great nation, we will #NeverForget.

Today we pause to remember an attack that took the lives of nearly 3,000 lives at the Pentagon, World Trade Center, and Shanksville, PA. Evil struck, but it did not shake our strength, resolve, and unbreakable spirit.

Tomorrow, hear from the Hon. James “Hondo” Geurts, assistant secretary of the Navy for research, development and acquisition, on why quantum technologies matter for the U.S. Navy and
U.S. Marine Corps—and the great promise they hold for all of DoD! Sec. Geurts will be a featured speaker at the “Million Dollar International Quantum U Tech Accelerator.” Joining him will be Dr. Tommy Willis, ONR program officer for Positioning, Navigation and Timing.

Catch the discussion at 9 a.m., when the final day of this exciting (and free) virtual event goes live. Chief of Naval Research Rear Adm. Lorin Selby will discuss ONR’s vision for quantum, and announce awards at 11 a.m.

This challenge is the result of a joint Navy and Air Force effort to get new performers into the quantum arenas of timing, sensing, computing and networks.

ONR’s partners on this include the Air Force Research Laboratory - AFRL, AFOSR, Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Griffiss Institute, New York State Technology Enterprise Corporation and
The Research Foundation for SUNY.

On this day in history (Aug. 23, 2005) the Advanced Electric Ship Demonstrator—or Sea Jet—was commissioned at Lake Pend Oreille, Idaho.

The 133-foot Sea Jet has served as a demonstrator for new hull and bow designs, as well as a test bed for new propulsion technologies--many of which have been incorporated into the Zumwalt-class destroyer. Sea Jet is owned by ONR and used for testing at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division, Bayview, Idaho detachment.

Tune in Aug. 25 at 3 p.m. Pacific and 6 p.m. Eastern for a guest lecture series presented by the Naval Postgraduate School featuring Dr. Kathryn Sullivan, a trailblazing NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration astronaut and one of the first six women to join the NASA Astronaut corps!

Looking forward to this month's Virtual #SECNAV Guest Lecture with Dr. Kathryn Sullivan, broadcasting live on August 25 at 3:00 p.m. Pacific on the NPS live streaming channel.

A modern day scientist/astronaut/explorer, Dr. Sullivan's career is a highlight reel of breaking barriers. As a NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration #astronaut, she became the first woman to perform a space walk on one of her three Space Shuttle missions. She later served as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Administrator from March 2014 - January 2017.

Most recently, Sullivan made headlines again, becoming the first woman to reach the deepest point known in the Earth's oceans, traveling to the bottom of #Challenger #Deep in the Deep Submergence Vehicle (DSV) Limiting Factor.

'Drawn-on-skin' electronics offer breakthrough in wearable monitors

Breakthrough in bioelectronics: A team of researchers out of the University of Houston has developed wearable monitors known as "drawn-on-skin" electronics. The electronics used to monitor physiological information are drawn on the skin with a pen, allowing them to seamlessly collect data regardless of the wearer's movements—a challenge with existing wearable bioelectronics.

This research, supported by ONR and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), may especially be useful in situations where it's not possible to access sophisticated equipment, including on a battleground, and has demonstrated the ability to accelerate healing of wounds.

Researchers have reported a new form of electronics known as 'drawn-on-skin electronics,' allowing multifunctional sensors and circuits to be drawn on the skin with an ink pen.
