The Shirlington Dog Park will be closed Tuesday, December 3, from 8:00 AM until 10 AM for tree removal.
Please be advised that no one will be allowed in the park during this time as the county crew will be bringing in heavy equipment to remove a couple of dead trees in the park. Thank you for your cooperation.

11/01/2019

The Shirlington Dog Park has been reopened but due to a recent petroleum release into Four Mile Run, please avoid contact with the stream until further notice from the County. This advisory is to allow time for the product to be diminished by natural flushing of the stream.

The Shirlington Dog Park will be closed until further notice.
There was a release of diesel fuel to the storm drain system and stream earlier this morning. Diana Handy from the environmental division and the Arlington Fire Dept, gave the instructions to close the park until further notice. Thank you for your cooperation.

Shirlington Dog Park October Newsletter

1. The dog park will be closed Tuesday, Oct 15, from 10:00 AM until noon for maintenance, cleanup and tree planting. Volunteers from the company Rosetta Stone will be participating in the efforts.

2. Please help keep the cleanup efforts going by making sure everyone picks up after their dogs. The future of the dog park depends on park users keeping it clean of poop and trash.

3. As the days are getting shorter, please note that the Shirlington dog park closes 30 minutes after sunset. Everyone and their dogs MUST be out of the park by then. Violators are subject to being cited for trespassing. The closest dog park that has lights and is open later is Ft Bernard, which is up the hill on Walter Reed Drive. See the link on our site for details and list of other dog parks that are open later.

4. Updates on possible new dog park in Pentagon City: Efforts continue to establish a dog park to meet vital needs in the Pentagon City area. The Aurora Highlands Civic Association this summer voted unanimously to support the establishment of a dog park and a resolution was sent to the Arlington County Board. Discussions continue with the Board and public input is critical to make sure dog-lovers’ voices are heard! If you would like to voice your support or help with this initiative, please email Lowell Nelson: [email protected]

5. We are still in need of clean plastic bags, such as those your newspaper comes in, for use in picking up dog poop. Please put them loosely in the two green mailboxes at either end of the park. You can also place them all in an outer bag and hang it on the shed door handle.

Just a reminder, Four Mile Run is not officially part of the dog park. But if you chose to let your dog swim, please be mindful that today’s torrential rainfall has led to a severely swollen creek and as in past flooding, containments from the local roadways and other sources have been deemed dangerous to dogs.

(*** All this is an unofficial warning)

What 5” rain in an hour looks like on Four Mile Run near us. Touched the Nelson footbridge too. This shows the water an hour after peak.

Should My Dog Play in the Stream? - Parks & Recreation

Shirlington Dog Park June Newsletter

1. Possible new dog park in South Arlington: There is an effort underway to place a dog park on the southeast corner of Eads Park, along Fort Scott Dr. and S. Eads St. Any additional dog park in the area is vitally needed. Please voice your support, particularly if you live near that area, by emailing Robert Hyde: [email protected]

2. Stream safety: Now that it is summer more of you will want to go down to the stream with your dog. Remember that the stream is NOT part of the Shirlington Dog Park and can be dangerous. Four Mile Run is an urban stream that at any time can carry a variety of pollutants as well as debris that can harm your dog and you. For more info please visit: https://parks.arlingtonva.us/parksfacilities/dog-parks/dog-play-stream/

3. To prevent further erosion of the stream bank and the dog park please do not walk along the bank outside of the fence bordering the park. Signs are posted on either end of the park.

4. The Arlington Philharmonic hosts a concert on Friday, June 28 at 8:00 PM at the Lubber Run Amphitheater. This is a free concert where your well-behaved dogs are welcome. For more info visit: http://www.arlingtonphilharmonic.org/

1. Results from the Spring Cleanup and Fund Raiser:
Even though Sunday was a washout we still raised nearly $2,200. Thank you all who made a donation and helped with the cleanup efforts. We were able to spread the mulch around the trees and do a little trash pick up but you can keep the efforts going by always picking up after your dogs and picking up trash and any stray poops you see. You can also make a tax-deductible donation anytime at our web site: https://shirlingtondogs.org

2. Welcome our two new volunteers, Lindsay and Mike. Along with Tina, Natalie and Carlton they are the ones filling the poop bag dispensers and moving out the full trash bin in the middle of the park to be collected. Make sure to say thanks when you see them.

3. We are always in need of clean plastic bags, such as those your newspaper comes in, for use in picking up dog poop. Please put them loosely in the two green mailboxes at either end of the park. You can also place them all in an outer bag and hang it on the shed door handle.

4. Make Your Mark, a hands-on festival of creativity will be Saturday, May 18, 11AM-3PM, at 3700 S. Four Mile Run Drive, up Oakland St from the dog park. This is a free family and dog-friendly event. For more info: https://arts.arlingtonva.us/makeyourmark2019/

If you want to voice your opinions/frustrations/support call/email one or ALL of the following the following. Arlington Co needs to know HOW many people use the dog park; how many people come from areas outside of the County, and (especially important) any support for any Shirlington Area businesses!

REMEMBER.... it was the Shirlington Dog community and YOUR effect that helped save the Shirlington park from significant decreases last year.

JUST FOR A BIT OF PERSPECTIVE: the new parking meters have prompted more action. The Co most know that this park is not just an Arlington treasure but treasured by folks all through the DC metro area.

Many who came to the park this morning have noticed the new parking meters and have voiced their frustration.

If you are upset at the meters CALL and EMAIL Arlington Co board, Arlington Co parks and Rec. let your voices be heard.

Last year YOUR efforts stopped the county from reducing the park spaces and your efforts to complain about the Meters is just as important.

A beloved pup of the dog park community passed away today, see note below:

Hello. Perhaps this is something you can post?

To the dog park family: For almost 7 years Sookie made 2 trips a day to Shirlington Dog Park. It was her beloved place. She loved jumping the fence to chase the squirrels and playing with your family. Sookie moved to Colorado in October and died today of heart failure. She was 10. I’m forever grateful for all the memories at the park with the community.

Just a REMINDER for this weekend from the Shirlington DogsII Official Group:

Give back to the dog park this weekend
The Shirlington dog park will have its fall clean-up and fund raising event this Saturday and Sunday, October 13 and October 14. Come show your support by helping with the clean-up starting at 10:00 both mornings and continuing through the day. Please meet next to the bulletin board near the main entrance. We will also be collecting donations both days and will have the dog park car magnets available for purchase.

We will provide everything you will need for the clean-up which will include picking up trash, clearing the path, and other light duties. Any amount of time that you can give to help is appreciated. We will be giving out gift cards from Dogma pet supply to those big helpers.

Remember that the dog park users are totally responsible for keeping the park clean and a safe and fun place for you and your dog.

Thank you and hope to see you at the park.

AND another REMINDER from this unofficial group: Always remember to scoop your dogs poop, and if you see another pile, pick it up (poop karma is real)! Remind others to pick up after their dogs or politely point out that their dog has made a "deposit." Even a quick distraction can distract an owner and they miss their dog going. And remember, any time is a good time to clean up debris at the park (glass, long lost parts of tennis balls or trash)!

Looks like stay-at-home is lasting a good bit longer. If you need a dog who's more binge watch than bonkers, apply to adopt Stella from Petey and Furends at peteyandfurends.org. https://www.facebook.com/zfgoldberg/posts/10106404332553025:1
Does anyone know about this altercation this morning around 11:15-11:30? We have an Aussie meetup there every Sunday, I must have just missed it, but this is from one of our members -- it was a big coon dog/mix that was tied to the bench next to the owner. As we were walking out WallE ran up to it. It was fine at first but I'm guessing it was getting anxiety just tied up there watching all dogs running around and coming up to him. But he attacked WallE, had to pretty much roll in and open its mouth cause it was shaking WallE from the mouth. But that same dog also attacked 2 others. the last guy called the cops cause it bit his golden doodle.
Does anyone know who to call to turn the water off? None of these numbers worked (did not call police non emergency).
Does anyone know who to call to shut the water off?
I lost my wallet at the park earlier today, it’s a brown wallet with a DC license with my name. Please contact me if found. My number is 703 395 5264
Hi Everyone - Looking for a bit of information. Today around 9-9:30 a.m. my Siberian Husky was attacked by another dog. Luckily, I was able to protect her by shielding her and kicking the other dog several times before the owner (finally) came to control their dog. Other than shaken up, my dog is fine, but who knows if she will be traumatized in the future. From feedback by other dog owners, this was not the dog’s first time attacking other dogs in this dog park. If you were there today and have any information about the dog or the dog’s owners, please reach out to me so I can accurately report this incident.
Does anyone know if the stream has been impacted by the toxic blue green algae? Thank you!
Picked up breakfast for the little ladies this morning. #mywoofbowl is parked on Nelson Street at the dog park until 11am.
Hello you all I am Ana and Im living at Shirlington close to Delancey buildibg I am willing to walk your dog during the mornings from Monday to Thursday. Let me know if you need any help and hit me up with a message ! Thanks for your time I adore dogs si much!
Please be warned there is a large wasp nest in the tree branches above the walking path in the park (see pin on the map image for location). I was attacked today and so was another man around 5:30pm. I have reported the nest to Arlington county, but please be careful in that area.
