Just a reminder, Four Mile Run is not officially part of the dog park. But if you chose to let your dog swim, please be mindful that today’s torrential rainfall has led to a severely swollen creek and as in past flooding, containments from the local roadways and other sources have been deemed dangerous to dogs.

(*** All this is an unofficial warning)

What 5” rain in an hour looks like on Four Mile Run near us. Touched the Nelson footbridge too. This shows the water an hour after peak.

The Shirlington Dog Park will be closed Thursday, June 20, from 10:00 AM until noon for scheduled maintenance.
Please be advised that no one will be allowed in the park during this time as the county crew will not be able to perform their tasks if visitors or dogs are in the park. Thank you for your cooperation.

Shirlington Dog Park June Newsletter

1. Possible new dog park in South Arlington: There is an effort underway to place a dog park on the southeast corner of Eads Park, along Fort Scott Dr. and S. Eads St. Any additional dog park in the area is vitally needed. Please voice your support, particularly if you live near that area, by emailing Robert Hyde: [email protected]

2. Stream safety: Now that it is summer more of you will want to go down to the stream with your dog. Remember that the stream is NOT part of the Shirlington Dog Park and can be dangerous. Four Mile Run is an urban stream that at any time can carry a variety of pollutants as well as debris that can harm your dog and you. For more info please visit: https://parks.arlingtonva.us/parksfacilities/dog-parks/dog-play-stream/

3. To prevent further erosion of the stream bank and the dog park please do not walk along the bank outside of the fence bordering the park. Signs are posted on either end of the park.

4. The Arlington Philharmonic hosts a concert on Friday, June 28 at 8:00 PM at the Lubber Run Amphitheater. This is a free concert where your well-behaved dogs are welcome. For more info visit: http://www.arlingtonphilharmonic.org/

5. Several car keys and fobs have been found. If you have lost yours in the park contact us at [email protected]

Shirlington Dog Park May Newsletter

1. Results from the Spring Cleanup and Fund Raiser:
Even though Sunday was a washout we still raised nearly $2,200. Thank you all who made a donation and helped with the cleanup efforts. We were able to spread the mulch around the trees and do a little trash pick up but you can keep the efforts going by always picking up after your dogs and picking up trash and any stray poops you see. You can also make a tax-deductible donation anytime at our web site: https://shirlingtondogs.org

2. Welcome our two new volunteers, Lindsay and Mike. Along with Tina, Natalie and Carlton they are the ones filling the poop bag dispensers and moving out the full trash bin in the middle of the park to be collected. Make sure to say thanks when you see them.

3. We are always in need of clean plastic bags, such as those your newspaper comes in, for use in picking up dog poop. Please put them loosely in the two green mailboxes at either end of the park. You can also place them all in an outer bag and hang it on the shed door handle.

4. Make Your Mark, a hands-on festival of creativity will be Saturday, May 18, 11AM-3PM, at 3700 S. Four Mile Run Drive, up Oakland St from the dog park. This is a free family and dog-friendly event. For more info: https://arts.arlingtonva.us/makeyourmark2019/

5. Found: a silver bracelet in the park. If yours contact us at info.shirlingtondogs.org

You can help support and save the Shirlington dog park by making sure you pick-up after your dogsand pointing out to others to do the same.  If you see trash, take a second and put it inthe bins.  Click to view all the dog park rules.

REMEMBER.... it was the Shirlington Dog community and YOUR effect that helped save the Shirlington park from significant decreases last year.

JUST FOR A BIT OF PERSPECTIVE: the new parking meters have prompted more action. The Co most know that this park is not just an Arlington treasure but treasured by folks all through the DC metro area.

Many who came to the park this morning have noticed the new parking meters and have voiced their frustration.

If you are upset at the meters CALL and EMAIL Arlington Co board, Arlington Co parks and Rec. let your voices be heard.

Last year YOUR efforts stopped the county from reducing the park spaces and your efforts to complain about the Meters is just as important.

A beloved pup of the dog park community passed away today, see note below:

Hello. Perhaps this is something you can post?

To the dog park family: For almost 7 years Sookie made 2 trips a day to Shirlington Dog Park. It was her beloved place. She loved jumping the fence to chase the squirrels and playing with your family. Sookie moved to Colorado in October and died today of heart failure. She was 10. I’m forever grateful for all the memories at the park with the community.

Just a REMINDER for this weekend from the Shirlington DogsII Official Group:

Give back to the dog park this weekend
The Shirlington dog park will have its fall clean-up and fund raising event this Saturday and Sunday, October 13 and October 14. Come show your support by helping with the clean-up starting at 10:00 both mornings and continuing through the day. Please meet next to the bulletin board near the main entrance. We will also be collecting donations both days and will have the dog park car magnets available for purchase.

We will provide everything you will need for the clean-up which will include picking up trash, clearing the path, and other light duties. Any amount of time that you can give to help is appreciated. We will be giving out gift cards from Dogma pet supply to those big helpers.

Remember that the dog park users are totally responsible for keeping the park clean and a safe and fun place for you and your dog.

Thank you and hope to see you at the park.

AND another REMINDER from this unofficial group: Always remember to scoop your dogs poop, and if you see another pile, pick it up (poop karma is real)! Remind others to pick up after their dogs or politely point out that their dog has made a "deposit." Even a quick distraction can distract an owner and they miss their dog going. And remember, any time is a good time to clean up debris at the park (glass, long lost parts of tennis balls or trash)!

Happy Sunday morning from the best dog park around!

I’m not sure if you have noticed but the number of dog park tennis balls 🎾 has dwindled lately. The park needs more balls!!

Just so you are aware, the tennis balls don’t just appear, people just like you bring bags full for everyone to enjoy

This is an all call for all users of the park... bring some balls. Think creatively and ask your family, friends, tennis obsessed neighbors if they have any dead or extra balls they want to donate!! In the past, I have bought balls on eBay, posted on my neighborhood listserv and even picked up balls around tennis courts (once I’ve made sure they aren’t anyone’s!!). You would be surprised how many people are more than willing to donate.

When you have a spare moment today or this week, see if you can use some of the ideas above (or any other creative ways) and just drop the balls in the park!!

The Shirlington dog park will be closed for a time on Thursday morning, July 5. The county will be using heavy equipment to do some maintenance work. Signs will be posted.

May 2018 Shirlington Dog Park Newsletter

1. Spring Cleanup and Fund Raiser Results:
Thank you to everyone that contributed the weekend of May 5 and 6. We raised over $3,900, which goes toward purchasing the poop bags as well as other supplies and maintenance for the dog park. You can make a tax- deductible donation anytime from our web site: https://shirlingtondogs.org and click on the “donate” bone.
A big thanks to those who helped with spreading mulch and park cleanup led by Carlton Willis, Jennifer Agabin and James Warmack. You can keep the effort going by picking up trash and poop if you see it every time you visit.

2. As the weather warms up more of you will want to go down to the stream with your dog. Remember that the stream is NOT part of the Shirlington Dog Park and can be dangerous. Four Mile Run is an urban stream that at any time can carry a variety of pollutants as well as debris that can harm your dog and you. For more info please visit:

3. We are always in need of clean plastic bags such as those your newspaper comes in, for use in picking up dog poop. Please bring the bags to the park and place in the two green mailboxes at either end of the park. If they are already full, please place in an outer bag and hang it on the shed door handle. This will help cut down the number of bags we have to purchase.

You can help support and save the dog park by making sure you pick-up after your dogsand pointing out to others to do the same. If you see trash, take a second and put it inthe bins. Click to view all the dog park rules.

Fundraising and Cleanup update from Shirlington Dogs II official group:

Thanks to all who made donations this past weekend during our Fall fundraising. We beat the goal by almost 50% and raised $4,403. All monies raised go to purchasing the poop bags and other supplies necessary to maintain the dog park and keep it the wonderful destination for dogs and their humans.

If you could not make it to the park you can still donate online at our website (https://shirlingtondogs.org/).

We sold out of the dog park magnets but we will have more available before our next fundraising weekend in the Spring.

Also thank you to those who helped with the clean-up and a special thanks to Carlton Willis who was spreading the mulch around the trees and Tina Worden and her son Tommy who led the clean-up effort.

You can say thanks by picking up after your dog as well as picking up trash or other poop every time you visit the park. Our goal is to make the Shirlington Dog Park as clean as possible to show how dedicated the park users are in wanting to keep it as the best dog park in the area. There still is more mulch to spread around the trees so if you would like to help with that sometime in the next week or so please send me an email at the website. Thank you.

You can help support and save the dog park by making sure you pick-up after your dogsand pointing out to others to do the same. If you see trash, take a second and put it inthe bins. Click to view all the dog park rules.
