The Arlington County Bar Association has been a long standing pillar of the Arlington community. It was founded in 1926 with 26 members. In 1977, the A.C.B.A. was incorporated as a Virginia not for profit corporation. It currently has approximately 500 members. The A.C.B.A. is a local volunteer association comprised of attorneys who work and/or live in Arlington County. The A.C.B.A. strives to preserve the high standards of integrity, dignity, honor, courtesy and to foster camaraderie among members of the legal profession. This association operates to maintain the honor and dignity of the profession of law, improve the professional competence of its members, facilitate the administration of justice and cultivate the science of jurisprudence. Many activities go on within the association. Continuing Legal Education (CLE) programs are run to address current legal topics and to promote the highest standards of practice within the legal profession. Monthly membership and board meetings are held, as well as various networking and social events, including an annual Judges’ Dinner. The A.C.B.A. has active sections and committees which focus directly in a legal specialty like business law, family law or trusts and estates. The Young Lawyers section is also a force within the organization. It caters to the needs of the young lawyers and works to connect new lawyers to an established network of knowledge and experience within the association. The Arlington County Bar Association contributes to the Arlington community in many ways. For many years, members of the A.C.B.A. have volunteered to speak to local High School students as part of its Law Day program. Members also spend time with the Glebe School Homework Club, volunteering as tutors. The association also has a booth at the Annual Arlington County Fair, to answer basic questions about the association and the legal profession. Since 1969 the Arlington County Bar Association has operated a Lawyer Referral Service. This public service assists in placing those in the community with qualified attorneys who specialize in the field of law required. More than 100,000 people have used this service since its inception for an initial nominal consultation fee. The A.C.B.A. works closely with the Arlington County Bar Foundation, a non profit grant making foundation and the Walter T. McCarthy Law Library, the public library located in the Arlington Courthouse. The Arlington County Bar Association expects to continue to serve its members, the legal profession and the public at large, by means of its volunteers and collaboration with the Bar Foundation and Walter T. McCarthy Law Library. Through our membership and community support, the Arlington County Bar Association will continue to be a vital part of the Arlington community.
