Looking Back As We Move Ahead - Responsibility.org

2020 presented us with unique challenges and state legislative efforts were no exception.

In the end, a number of important laws were passed that will help to reduce impaired driving including improvements to ignition interlock laws, which is one of the most important ways to prevent impaired driving.

In a few cases, new trends have emerged that we had to oppose, such as several states focusing on expunging DUI charges.

Whitmer vetoes bill to let 1-time DUI offenders clear record

We applaud 👏 Governor Gretchen Whitmer's decision to keep Michigan’s DUI law intact. Expungement of DUIs makes it very difficult to identify and adequately treat repeat offenders who cause a disproportionate number of DUI deaths on our roadways every year.

Thank you for your strong leadership on this public safety issue!

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer refused to sign a bill that would have let an estimated 200,000 one-time drunken drivers ask a judge to set aside their conviction, despite the measure’s broad bipartisan support in the Michigan Legislature.

Hi.

IMPAIRMENT U. S. A. Becoming an Impaired Being (I.B.) is a matter of making STUPID CHOICES from one or more questionable options: give your money to a street dealer in exchange for a “hit”; to the dealer behind the bar to pay for your margarita; to the retail dealers where you buy booze and tobacco; and when you text while walking or driving a vehicle. All of which are horrific not normal human conditions whereby too many of us are “high”, or drunk and/or texting while driving a vehicle and too many other activities. Add to one or more of these options a weapon, a mental disorder or certain prescribed medications and it is easy to understand why we are where we are today. (Don’t ask - - read or watch the real and fake news) An Impaired Being (I.B.) driving a vehicle is an act of stupidity which when apprehended, in most states, is all too easy to “overcome” by paying a fine. Unfortunately fines, jail time and temporary driving privilege suspensions DO NOT prevent enough of the I.B. from drinking and driving again and again, which continue to keep our roads dangerous. Driving drunk, otherwise impaired and/or texting too often result in death. At the present time after a convicted I.B. pays a fine, serves time and drives away, perhaps it should become public information so everyone knows about ALL THOSE guilty of an act almost as stupid as abusing children and pets or FORGETTING WHERE ONE’S GUN IS UNTIL ONE’S LITTLE BOY FINDS IT AND SPRAYS HIS BRAINS ALL OVER THE KITCHEN WITH IT. How? Begin with the local evening TV news deleting one commercial, listing instead the names and addresses furnished by the state of all the I.B.’s convicted of DUI and DWI in the Metro area. However, so long as TV Commercials plus aisle after aisle of alcoholic temptations promoted and sold in grocery stores, except in too few states which sell booze ONLY in State Stores, and free roaming drug dealers continue to feed the I.B.’s and wannabe craving, the battle is being lost by the most powerful nation in history. Possibly the answer is a bumper sticker proclaiming I DRIVE IMPAIRED. Thank You - - -Dave Henrie @dfhenrie
