MIRANDA FOR EVERY STUDENT
Please join me in voting for Miranda Turner (https://www.mirandaturner.org) as Arlington's best choice to honor the spirit of President Biden's "Day One" executive order focused on safe school re-openings (https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions/2021/01/21/executive-order-supporting-the-reopening-and-continuing-operation-of-schools-and-early-childhood-education-providers/), Secretary Cardona's May 6th tweet calling for schools to reopen this spring to address inequities (https://twitter.com/seccardona/status/1390416125297664001?s=21), and to reverse our current status in the minority of schools surveyed by IES for failing to offer in-person full-time instruction (https://ies.ed.gov/schoolsurvey/).
Our Arlington County Democratic Committee has offered us 24/7 safe, secure mobile voting through May 23rd, with a few in-person options later this week (https://arlingtondemocrats.org/vote/sbcaucus/).
As a parent deeply committed to public school education, I had hoped Arlington would lead the Commonwealth in safely reopening our schools. We were once regarded as a leader in effective, efficient government, but when CDC updated its social distancing guidance, APS took weeks to publish updated classroom capacity (https://www.apsva.us/maintenance/classroom-occupancy-based-on-social-distancing/), and inexplicably, the School Board failed to raise a single question or hold a single vote on returning our elementary schools to full-time in person instruction, even though they can do so safely with minimal (if any) disruption.
Please consider voting for Miranda to hold our School Board accountable for failing our young children as their spirits diminish watching neighbors across the region return (safely) full-time. This is not a partisan issue, but rather one of basic competence. Let's restore professionalism and problem solving leadership before it is too late for our kids.
