We had a great week hanging out with some of the kiddos from the Chesterbrook Academy Ashburn Village. DFC J. Engler and Deputy T. Bradley talked to the preschoolers about what law enforcement officers do, the importance of knowing your address and when to call 9-1-1.

Thank you for visiting the LCSO Ashburn Station!

Fire Marshal’s Determine Cause of Two Alarm House Fire in Ashburn

Fire Marshal’s Determine Cause of Two Alarm House Fire in Ashburn

The Loudoun County Fire Marshal’s Office has completed their investigation into a two alarm house fire that did $1.5 million in damages to four homes earlier this week and offers important safety tips.
At 3:24 a.m., on July 31st, 2019, the Loudoun County Combined Fire and Rescue System responded to a reported house fire at 20238 Millstead Drive in Ashburn. When firefighters arrived on the scene they found two, neighboring, single family homes with significant fire showing. Crews quickly searched for occupants and initiated an aggressive fire attack on the two homes and worked to protect the neighboring structures.
The home where the fire began was unoccupied at the time of the incident and the residents of the other three homes affected were out of the area. There was one firefighter treated for a minor burn injury and no civilian injuries.
The Loudoun County Fire Marshal’s Office has classified the fire as accidental, due to the spontaneous combustion of improperly disposed oily rags, and estimated the total damages at $1.5 million. The estimated dollar loss includes the originally impacted four homes and an additional four homes that received minor damages.
This incident demonstrates the safety hazards posed by projects around the home. Oil-based products and other highly volatile products commonly used for projects include paints, stains, teak oil, linseed oil, varnishes, polyurethane, and paint thinners. When oil and stain soaked rags are not disposed of properly they can become a fire hazard due to their ability to spontaneously combust.
Prevention of spontaneous combustion fires begins with good housekeeping as a clean work area can prevent a fire from spreading. To properly and safely dispose of oil or gas soaked rags:
• Spread rags in a single layer, flat on the ground/driveway or hang them in a safe area away from combustibles, so heat dissipates while the material cures.
• An oily rag has cured when it becomes hard and brittle. The time it takes to cure can vary considerably depending on humidity, temperature, and the finish.
• Place dried rags in an airtight metal container with tight-fitting lid, and cover with water and an oil breakdown detergent. This will prevent the oils from oxidizing, keeping the rags from heating up and igniting. The metal can with water is a temporary solution until the rags may be properly removed from the site. Don’t add any other combustible material (stuff that can catch fire).

Good Afternoon Lion Nation! I am very proud to introduce you to a new member to our family, Erica Sreniawski! Erica will join our TEAM as a EL Teacher. She will spend half of her day with us here at the Lane and travel to Ashburn ES for the other half of the school day. We are so very excited to have her join our TEAM! Below is some profile information regarding our new staff member. Please join me in giving Mrs. Sreniawski a warm Lion Nation welcome!!

Where did you grow up? I grew up in Brazil until I was 12 and then moved to Arlington, Virginia.

Where did you go to school? I graduated with a double major in International Relations of Latin America and Spanish from the College of William and Mary. After a career in consulting and entrepreneurship, I went to Shenandoah University to complete the Career Switcher Program with endorsement in English as a Second Language.

What are you currently reading? “Kind is the New Classy” by Candace Cameron Bure

What is your favorite book of all time? I don’t have a favorite book, but my favorites have been: The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown, Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel, Ultramarathon Man: Confessions of an All Night Runner by Dean Karnazes. Children’s book: The Book with No Pictures by B. J. Novak

Favorite quote? Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind. - Dr. Seuss

Why did you want to become a teacher? Teaching has always been a desire of mine. I love talking to children, discovering how they think and their perspective on life. Being an ELL Teacher is very meaningful to me because I was once an ELL student myself. I can definitely relate to the students and help them with the tools and techniques they need to succeed. Making a difference in children's lives is my motivation as a teacher. My teaching experience has varied from being a Spanish teacher assistant at The College of William and Mary, dance choreographer/instructor, volunteer at my children's elementary school, and substitute teacher for Loudoun County Public Schools.

Who inspires you? My parents are my biggest inspiration. They gave up their profession and life in Brazil to come to the United States and work humble jobs so my sister and I could have a great education. Since I was little, they have taught me to persevere through life’s challenges, show respect to others, work hard, try my best, be kind, and generous. I am constantly learning from them!

What are you looking forward to as you begin here at Cedar Lane? I am looking forward to meeting the students I will be working with. I am really excited to get to know the students, their interests, strengths, weaknesses, and how I can help them achieve their academic goals. I look forward to working with the wonderful teachers and staff of Cedar Lane and be involved in the Cedar Lane community.

A little bit about me! I live in Ashburn, Virginia with my husband, daughter (10 yrs old), and son (8 yrs old). We love to play board games, watching movies, and doing outdoor activities together. I love dancing, traveling around the world (I’ve been to 24 countries), and cooking. I speak Portuguese and Spanish.

Fire Marshal’s Investigating Two Alarm House Fire in Ashburn

Loudoun County Fire Marshal’s Office remains on scene of a two alarm house fire that destroyed two homes and damaged two more.

At 3:24 a.m. the Loudoun County Emergency Communications Center (ECC) received multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting a house fire at 20238 Millstead Drive in Ashburn. Fire and rescue crews from Ashburn, Sterling Park, Kincora, Cascades, Broadlands, Lansdowne, Leesburg and Fairfax County responded along with numerous command and safety officers. While firefighters were enroute to the incident, ECC dispatchers advised callers were now reporting multiple homes were on fire.

When firefighters arrived on the scene they found two, neighboring, single family homes with significant fire coming from the second floor and extending through the roof. The fire was quickly spreading to the homes to either side of the two involved structures. A second alarm and a rapid intervention task force were immediately requested bringing additional units to assist with firefighting operations.

Firefighters quickly searched for occupants and initiated an aggressive fire attack on the two fully involved homes from the exterior using large hoselines and ladder truck operations. Crews quickly worked to protect the other two homes and stop the fire from spreading. Once the fires were extinguished, firefighters remained on the scene putting out hot spots and supporting the Fire Marshal’s Office with their investigation.
The home where the fire began was unoccupied at the time of the incident and the residents of the other three homes affected were out of the area. The Fire Marshal’s Office is currently on scene working to determine a cause and an estimate of damages. There was one firefighter transported to a local hospital for a minor burn injury and no civilian injuries.
