One Heart DC

One Heart DC "Advancing the Gospel together in the DMV" OneHeartDC is a movement uniting and mobilizing churches, church networks and other organizations to saturate Metro Washington DC (DMV) with the Good News of Jesus Christ.

May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Romans 15:5-6 NIV84) • Vision OneHeartDC is a movement uniting and mobilizing churches, church networks and other organizations to saturate the Metro Washington DC region (DMV) with the Good News of the Gospel. We want each of our 5 million neighbors to experience the love and message of Jesus Christ through one or more of our partners. We celebrate what God is doing here – creating greater visibility and awe of God within our churches and communities. We accelerate the spread of the Good News by sharing information, resources and teams for greater impact. • Missional Objectives OneHeartDC provides a platform or eco-system to release latent Kingdom building capacity for Gospel Saturation of the DMV. Three foundational ‘pillars’ interconnect the Body of Christ so we are more fully functioning: Prayer – We are founded and fueled through prayer that strengthens our communion with God and maintains covering over our mission. We sponsor prayer and worship gatherings as catalysts for building a regional culture of prayer. We seek to cover households across our entire region in prayer by name. Unity – We are a movement of churches, Christian leaders and organizations united in our belief that the Good News of Jesus Christ changes lives. Thus, we assume collective accountability for reaching every man, woman and child with the Gospel. Our bonds around this goal and core Christian theologies allows mobilization and collaboration together and setting aside any denominational, generational, racial and ethnic barriers. Through relationships in Leadership Clusters, we strengthen capacities for transformation of people and communities through discipleship, service and evangelism. Our unity helps us to assess regional coverage of the Gospel and assure multiplication through new church plants and missions in the gaps. Our unity results in bridge-building, reconciliation and thriving communities. Hope – We offer hope by proclaiming the gospel in Word and demonstrating it in deed. This occurs through local and regional mobilization and collaboration together. We provide a network for sharing information on events, equipping for mission, service projects and resources, and sharing stories that inspire hope and point people to God and His glory.

Mission: Gospel Saturation of the DMV (Greater Metro Washington, DC region including the District of Columbia and surrounding jurisdictions in Maryland and Virginia)

Pastors, Alice Kim captures the challenges and joys of your life and ministry so well through her vantage points as a pastor’s wife and professionally as a counselor.

We are cheering you on and praying that you will cultivate the health of your own souls and find increasingly joy in the gospel. We are praying for you and for how we may come alongside you.

Alice Kim (Emmaus Counseling and Consulting Services, LLC / Emmausccs.com) reads her article, Two Ways We Can Better Appreciate Our Pastors.

"October is Pastors Appreciation Month. Over the years, my husband, now in this 28th year of ministry, has been showered with written words, delicious meals, generous gift cards, and much-desired services like babysitting for our then toddlers, all affirming his impact in ministry. But as I think of some, trudging through prolonged and unrelenting seasons of discouragement, I wonder, what else is needed to help pastors finish faithfully."

Our Story

Overview

Christ followers in Metro Washington want to see the Gospel saturate our entire region, but this not happening because the Church of the DMV is not functioning as Jesus intended. In the Great Commission and in His prayer for unity in John 17, Jesus communicated two important commands:

  • He called leaders to equip all Christ followers to be missionaries and to ‘go’ and to make disciples.

  • He called leaders and followers alike to build unity within and amongst all expressions of His Church as a witness of Oneness in Christ and the power of the gospel.

We Can Never Lose Our Inheritance in Christ Jesus Spiritually hungry disciples of Jesus Christ will find that I Peter Chapter 1 is packed with spiritual nourishment for those persecuted, hunted, and scattered men and women. It was a difficult day, as it is for many today. Persecution can distract you and divert you from Christ – and cool your love for Jesus and the Gospel – and baffle your thinking. You are chosen - you are different - you have been set apart so that you can obey - you have been sprinkled (or sealed) with the blood of Jesus. Verse 3 - Peter refers to this essential fact - to that day when we were born again. Let that fact encourage you to praise the living God Who has saved us and who loves us. We can count it a joy that we have this privilege of suffering, to some degree, for the Name of Jesus Christ. We thank God and bless God. Peter has found the reality of salvation. This is not our lasting home. We are pilgrims, on a journey – passing through. This is the man who stood up on the Day of Pentecost and spoke so clearly and powerfully under that anointing of the Holy Spirit. Some people laughed and ridiculed and mocked, as they did not know what God was doing. Peter explained and proclaimed the truth courageously and boldly. With an uncertain future before us in the world - we need this living hope - this real assurance which is so vital and vibrant - and which breathes certainty into our lives. All this is possible because of GOD’S GREAT MERCY! Death has lost its sting. It nips a little and the memory of that nip can remain for some time - but death has lost its sting. A hope that is divorced from the new birth is a forlorn hope. Disillusionment can set in when man sees he cannot change the world! The heart of the human problem is the problem of the human heart! The Middle East – only God through Jesus Christ can resolve this. Your inheritance will be kept for you, and you will be kept for your inheritance. This reward can never perish - or spoil - or fade away - nor vanish. Whatever bankers may have done over these past years with interest rates – investments – or inheritances – nobody can touch this one! It is indestructible – non perishable – non spoilable – unfading. It is reserved for you. It cannot be given to someone else. Peter’s writing is saturated with the significance of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. To be alive physically you have to be physically born – to be alive spiritually you have to be born again. Paul speaks about this experience as resurrection – God came to us when we were dead in trespasses and sin and raised us up from all that – raised from the dead! This is the essence of our Christian Faith and Christian Life. The essential element of our new birth is a human impossibility – it is all of God – by His Grace and Mercy. God had done this for them! Verse 5 - You are shielded - protected - by the power of God. This inheritance is being kept in heaven for you, and this will always be the situation until Jesus Christ returns - He is coming back. We have an imperishable inheritance. No catastrophe can touch this inheritance – no sin can defile it – no decay can change it. This is kept by God in heaven for you – shielded means, ‘being kept’. These truths need frequent repetition today, because so very few people know anything about what the Scriptures teach. It is a great advantage to preach and teach the whole of the Bible, and to do so systematically, because it presents people with the whole counsel of God, over a period, and prevents the preacher or teacher from riding his personal hobbyhorse, or taking his favourite passages over and over again. “Almighty God, we thank You for the Bible – the whole of it – for every part of it. We thank You for Your Word through which You speak to men and women – and to boys and girls. In a day when many hardly know anything at all about the Bible, break through again, and raise up preachers and teachers who will open up Your Holy Word – we pray in Jesus Name. Amen” (This week's "Word from Scotland" - previous pieces may be found at Studylight.org and liveasif.org in the 'Archives' section - warmest greetings in Christ Jesus.)
Don't miss out, mark your calendars for 9.22.18 when the Church of Metro Washington will experience a heightened sense of God's presence and connectedness in unity with Christ followers from across the region.

This is wonderful, Howard, thanks so much for the notice. I love this!
May the Lord God continue to grant you the strength, wisdom, the character of Jesus Christ, and the provisions needed to glorify Him in the ministry! In Jesus name!!!
Which Do You Want – the Law or the Promise? Do we not wonder sometimes just what God is doing? We are in this challenging Chapter 3 of the letter to the disciples of Jesus Christ in Galatia. Paul is seeking to answer this difficult question – what is the place and purpose of the Commandments and where does the mercy and grace and love and forgiveness of God fit into all this? It became a real problem then and for many it remains a serious issue today. False teachers had thrown and shaken these disciples of Jesus, and wherever they appear they continue to throw and shake and even undermine. There are many false teachers around. The Commandments have a limited application. They can prevent you from becoming worse, regarding your behaviour, but they cannot make you righteous in the eyes of God. For righteousness in the sight of God we need a Saviour – a Redeemer – a Rescuer – and God the Father provided Jesus Christ Who fulfilled that role completely – and He still does. Here we see something of the wisdom of God, and how He knows what He is doing. He always does. Now know that. Believe that. As disciples of Jesus Christ we should be maturing to that stage where we do not need the laws of God regarding behaviour. Some people may always need them, because they just refuse to mature. How many leaders wish they had paid attention to what God has said regarding adultery? How many businessmen wish they had listened to, "You shall not STEAL"? Rules are needed for order. In school, walk on this side of the corridor - behave at the table - and then one day, that child is trusted with the keys of the home. Rules shut you in - limiting you – but the key - the promise - the Gospel - releases you. That is why the law is inferior to the promise. Which do you want – the law or the promise? The law was given through angels, and through Moses, to the people, but the promise was given directly to Abraham from God - and to us directly, through Jesus Christ, the Son of God. I have found that I keep having to explain who Jesus Christ is and what Jesus Christ does – because so few are aware of His Sovereign role – let people see and know who Jesus Christ is! Verse 20 - If you use a middle man - a mediator - you have a go-between - you are almost negotiating - and in one sense that was true - "If you do - I will bless". The promise is not like that. It is a Covenant. God speaks. It is one sided - no negotiating - and no 'ifs'. In these ‘modern times’ many people are unwilling to appreciate that truth – they want to negotiate with God and perhaps even argue with God. In one sense, that can be all right provided we understand that we will not ‘win’ that ‘argument’. I cannot bargain with God. I cannot negotiate with God. I cannot bargain with my Creator and Saviour and Redeemer and Lord. The law is there to deal with our wrong doing. If passing laws could improve people, we would be perfect, when you consider what Holyrood, Westminster, and Europe, have passed over these past few years. You cannot make an honest man by Act of Parliament. The trouble is due to SIN. Paul is saying here - no law can make you good - but the promise of God can transform a man - rescue a man - empower a man – and equip a man. People know when they are on the run from the law - or from GOD. The truth shall set you FREE. I am the truth. This whole and clear and simple teaching is to be found John Chapter 8 and verse 31 - spoken to those who were becoming believers - "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free." Paul wanted these Galatian believers in Jesus Christ to keep their freedom – and not to lose it. “Loving Father, we thank You and praise You for all that You give us - we thank You for Jesus – a Saviour who loves us and leads us and guides us.” Amen. (This week's "Word from Scotland" - previous articles may be found at Studylight.org and liveasif.org - in the 'Archives' section. Warmest greetings in Christ Jesus.)
