“Every fall, a small blue warbler weighing less than half an ounce leaves the forests of Western North Carolina and disappears south. It reappears later in the cloud forests of the Colombian Andes, moving through mixed flocks of tanagers, hummingbirds, and wrens; birds most of us have never seen. Colombia holds more bird species than any country on Earth: over 2,000, including more than 165 species of hummingbirds alone. Its landscapes range from Caribbean deserts to Amazonian rivers, from páramos to Pacific rainforests, each a world entirely different.
The Cerulean Warbler doesn't know about borders. It belongs simultaneously to our Appalachian forests and to those misty Andean slopes, and understanding that connection changes the way we think about conservation, migration, and what it means to protect a bird.”
