Blue Ridge Audubon Chapter

Blue Ridge Audubon Chapter Welcome to the Asheville area's chapter of the Audubon Society! Our website can be found at blueridgeaudubon.org. October through March, and 8:00 a.m.

The Blue Ridge Audubon Chapter, founded in 1986, is a chapter of the National Audubon Society serving Asheville and surrounding areas. The chapter owns and manages the Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary, located off Merrimon Avenue. This land, originally slated to be developed as a strip mall in the late 1980s, was instead purchased by the chapter (with help from many generous donors) and is now a little

slice of birding heaven within the city of Asheville. Bird walks, led by knowledgeable birders, are held at the sanctuary on the first Saturday of every month - 9:00 a.m. April through September.

Trivia Time at Turgua had us thinking hard, and laughing and cheering each other on. It was a tough competition requiring a tiebreaker question, but in the end our excellent quizmasters from ReWild Asheville and Blue Ridge Audubon awarded the coveted Hellbender to just one team. Thanks for having us Turgua Brewing Company! It was a blast!

Support our Birdathon to support the migratory bird species in Colombia! 🌎

“Every fall, a small blue warbler weighing less than half an ounce leaves the forests of Western North Carolina and disappears south. It reappears later in the cloud forests of the Colombian Andes, moving through mixed flocks of tanagers, hummingbirds, and wrens; birds most of us have never seen. Colombia holds more bird species than any country on Earth: over 2,000, including more than 165 species of hummingbirds alone. Its landscapes range from Caribbean deserts to Amazonian rivers, from páramos to Pacific rainforests, each a world entirely different.

The Cerulean Warbler doesn't know about borders. It belongs simultaneously to our Appalachian forests and to those misty Andean slopes, and understanding that connection changes the way we think about conservation, migration, and what it means to protect a bird.”

BIRDATHON! Next weekend, May 8-9. It's an annual fundraiser and this year we continue to support our ongoing partnership with SELVA Colombia to protect migratory birds through hemispheric conservation. Many of the birds migrating through the mountains right now spent winter in Central or South America. The funds we raise with BIRDATHON go directly to reforestation and training local Colombian conservationists.
