Monday, August 17 — City Council Meetings 5:30pm, 6:00 pm, 7:00pm

A full evening of City Council meetings is scheduled for Monday, August 17, at 4230 Lake Avenue. Residents are always welcome to attend.

🏛️ 5:30 p.m. — Work Session
Council will discuss the proposed Thriving Communities Commission and the draft ordinance establishing it. The meeting will include questions, Council discussion and possible public comment.

🏛️ 6:00 p.m. — Pre-Council Meeting
Council will hear administrative and committee reports and review the legislation appearing on the regular meeting agenda.

🏛️ 7:00 p.m. — Regular City Council Meeting
The meeting will begin with a special resolution honoring Assistant Finance Director Carolyn Sheldon upon her retirement after more than 37 years of service to the City.

The meeting will also include the swearing-in of the new Ward 1 Council member, Scott Decola.

Items scheduled for consideration include:

• $23,100 for another round of street-cut and road-deck repairs
• A $668.80 change order for an additional security-camera mount at the City Annex
• $186,765 for one year of law-enforcement professional liability insurance
• Disposal of obsolete Water Pollution Control Department equipment
• Up to $302,889 for the City’s annual liability, property and casualty insurance
• Supplemental appropriations totaling $116,917.79
• Second readings of legislation updating address-number requirements for buildings along alleys and similar rights-of-way. Property owners would have until November 1, 2026, to comply.

The regular meeting also includes time for citizen comments and community announcements.

I believe residents deserve to know what is being discussed and how public dollars may be spent. Staying informed and participating are important parts of local government.

Tomorrow night’s agenda includes several items that may be of interest to residents:

• A proposed 100% Community Reinvestment Area (CRA) tax abatement for seven years for a newly constructed long-term residential rental property at 725 E. 15th Street.

• Consideration of a General Fund Reserve Policy designed to provide long-term financial stability and establish reserve guidelines.

• Authorization to purchase a Ford Maverick for the Planning and Community Development Department.

• Approval of additional vacation leave for the City’s Victim Advocate based on prior public service.

• Supplemental appropriations for the State, County and Municipal Roads Fund.

• First readings of ordinances updating requirements for the placement of address numbers on buildings.

• Second readings of ordinances increasing penalties for retailers who sell to***co or va**ng products to individuals under the age of 21.

Is everyone all right after the storm?

I didn’t run for City Council for the paycheck. I ran because I wanted to help build a better community, to listen to residents, ask questions, and bring their concerns forward. My favorite part of being a councilor is working on projects where the community and the city come together to make Ashtabula a better place.

If you’re passionate about our community and want to help shape its future, I encourage you to consider running for office. I would also encourage more people to attend council meetings. The more residents who are informed and involved, the stronger our city becomes. Public service is challenging, but it’s also rewarding. I do believe more people would step forward if the compensation better reflected the time and responsibility the job requires.

For those who are curious, my council take home pay is $15.68 deposited into my checking account twice a month. I also receive health insurance, and I recognize that is a valuable benefit. Serving this community has never been about the money. It’s about representing the people who elected me and working to make Ashtabula a better place for everyone.

Monday’s agenda includes:
• Removal of hazardous trees throughout the city
• Authorization to apply for a wastewater infrastructure loan
• Disposal of obsolete city vehicles
• First reading of updates to to***co sales penalties

One of the best ways to stay informed is to attend a Council meeting. Whether you come to listen, ask questions during public comment, or simply learn more about what’s happening in our city, your involvement matters.

Yesterday, a neighbor stopped by my house just to thank me for advocating for citywide recycling.

To be honest, I was having a hard day after reading council emails and wondering if I was making a difference.

Those few minutes reminded me why I serve. Sometimes one kind word is all it takes to remind you that the work matters.

Thank you. It meant more than you know.
