05/20/2026

Organizers from all of the downtown events have been joining forces to ask that the Community Enhancement program funds be increased from 250k to 500k, since the Mayor's current proposed budget only has a 50k increase. This fund is collected as a $.07 per dollar tax on hotel and short-term rental stays in Athens, they do not burden local tax-payers whatsoever.
Allocations from this fund are decided by Athens Mayor and Commission and are supposed to be used specifically for tourism. We are asking our local government for the CEP budget to be enhanced, recommending $500,000 this year - That's only 7% of this year's Hotel/Motel Fund with the other 5.9 MILLION going toward the Classic Center!

We have seen a dramatic decrease in local sponsors due to the state of the economy. With prices increasing every year, many events are wondering how long we'll be able to keep going at this rate. Public input to show how much Athenians love these free, diverse, and family-friendly events is what we need to show the commissioners that this decision would be supported by the community.
