Yesterday, May 15, Nakba Day, marks 78 years of displacement, theft, oppression, and genocide against the Palestinian people. While we remember the massacres and destruction of 1948, thousands of people fleeing their homes, taking the keys with them thinking they’d be back in a few days, only to find their homes stolen and soldiers threatening to shoot them if they returned, it is also important to recognize that in many ways the Nakba never ended. Despite the so-called “ceasefire,” as Israel and the U.S. have brought colonial war to Iran and Lebanon, bombs and strikes have hit Gaza every day. The Gaza Health Ministry estimates at least 850 have been killed since the start of the ceasefire. Paraphrasing what Dr. Refaat once said: Palestine ceases, Israel fires. The destruction in the West Bank continues with almost no Western media coverage - there were roughly six settler attacks against Palestinians per day in the last half of April and 160 displaced in that month. And Israel passed a law in March permitting the death penalty for only Palestinian prisoners, convicted of killing Israelis in military courts with conviction rates of around 96%. It’s not just in the area ruled over by “Israel” either. The UK bans Palestine Action but allows “charities” that sell stolen land on illegal settlements in the West Bank. States in Australia have banned saying “from the river to the sea.” The U.S. is actively expediting Mahmoud Khalil’s deportation for being Palestinian and protesting for his land and people. The colonial powers are closing ranks to ensure the genocide of Palestinians can continue with barely a whisper in the news. It is our responsibility to make sure that doesn’t happen.Â

He is dealing with a broken arm and needs insulin for type I diabetes, and on top of that, his son Karim has chicken pox and desperately needs relief and treatment.
