For many years, before modern equipment replaced them, canaries were the best way to detect carbon monoxide gas deep under ground in a coal mine. This picture from 1928 shows a miner and his little friend. How did it work? Well, canaries are small and a very little bit of a gas like carbon monoxide will kill them. So the death of his canary would warn the miner to get out of the mine before he suffered the same fate. Ok now you know about canaries and
coal mines, but how do frogs fit in?

Have you ever passed a wet area in spring and heard the high pitched sound of Spring Peepers? So tiny but sooooo loud. I once made the mistake of catching one and brought it inside. Wow, big mistake. The sound was deafening. Anyway, that little picture of the frog I posted a bit ago is a Spring Peeper.
Now my question for you is why do we need to pay attention to frogs? One more question, how do coal mines, canaries and frogs fit together? Go find the answer, kids. I will be waiting to hear from you.

We all are using a unique measurement system, The English System, while the rest of the world uses another, The Metric. Let’s all learn to measure scientifically with a few simple visual cues. Since we will be dealing with frogs and Toads this week, we will keep it small.

I gram = the weight of a standard small paper lip
Millimeter = about that width of a dime
Centimeter= about the width of the pinky finger of a 8-10 year old child

This is not absolutely accurate, but can help a child begin to understand and what these measurements mean in their world.
