Mount Zion Eagles - High School Carrollton GA. has been named a National STEM Certified Campus by the National Institute for STEM Education completing a multi-year plan for all Carroll County Schools to become certified.

NISE-certified STEM campuses have implemented 21st-century learning and strategies in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics that transform school culture and maximize student achievement. Only 2 percent of schools in the nation are STEM certified by NISE.

NISE offers STEM Teaching Certification and supports educators in their efforts to create STEM-based instruction. Five MZHS teachers earned individual STEM certification: Roxi Barkley, Chyna Gowan, Wade Traylor, Brigette Williams and Levi Williams. Upon completion of the required 38 indicators, participants are better equipped to not only academically challenge students but also prepare them for college and career readiness.

“STEM has been a priority for us in Carroll County since 2018,” Carroll County Schools Superintendent Scott Cowart said, “and this year we will achieve 100 percent national STEM certification for our schools. We emphasize future-focused thinking and skills, because we know STEM concepts are a great way to teach students to be goal oriented and have a growth mindset. STEM practices are a strong foundation to create lifelong learners.”

MZHS is one of the final three Carroll County Schools campuses earning their NISE certification this spring. All 23 traditional K-12 schools in the Carroll County School System are now nationally STEM certified, making the district the largest in the nation with 100 percent STEM certification.

“We continue to invest in STEM learning because we know it makes a difference in student learning and prepares them for the workforce of tomorrow,” Associate Superintendent of School Performance Dr. Jessica Ainsworth said. “Our mission is for students to graduate ready to be enrolled, enlisted or employed, and STEM concepts make a powerful impact in preparing them for the future.”

Evolving from STEM professional development and curriculum created at Rice University, the National Institute for STEM Education certification process integrates the most recent research and best practices in STEM, 21st-century learning, and professional development. By using a self-paced, mentor-led approach, NISE certifies teachers, campuses, and districts in STEM teaching.

“Through the STEM process our teachers are transforming student learning by encouraging our students to think critically and become problem solvers,” MZHS Principal Connie Cook said. “This will equip them to face challenges as they transition to being enrolled, employed, or enlisted after high school. Providing STEM opportunities in the classroom is helping us positively change lives in our school and our community.”

MZHS English Teacher Chyna Gowan, shared her discoveries as she became a STEM-certified educator.

“ELA (and the arts) benefit from meaningful STEM instruction just as much as science- and math-heavy subjects, and I've seen that firsthand this year,” Gowan said. “I've seen my kids rise to challenges and expand their views to create interesting and unique work. They have truly and genuinely leaned into critical thinking in a way that has helped them in analyzing literature but will also help them in life.”

Carroll County Schools is a leader in STEM education. All campuses are STEM certified schools by the district and 22 schools are nationally STEM certified by NISE. Carroll County School System is one of a handful of school districts in Georgia to utilize a district STEM certification process.

“The addition of our new STEM innovation lab and having the honor of becoming a National STEM Certified school reflects our commitment to preparing students for the future through rigorous, relevant, and innovative learning experiences,” VRMS Principal Kevin Muldoon said.

VRMS teacher Sydney Coleman shared her discoveries as she became a STEM-certified educator.

“Completing the STEM course is good for both kids and teachers. It helps students learn how to think, solve problems, and understand the world around them. It makes learning more fun and hands-on when completed efficiently, which keeps kids interested and excited,” she said. “For me, STEM allows me the opportunity to be creative in my lessons and helps better prepare students with important skills they will need for the future.”

The Carroll County Board of Education has named Dr. Jessica M. Ainsworth as the sole finalist to serve as the next superintendent of Carroll County Schools. The announcement follows the news of Superintendent Scott Cowart’s retirement after 16 years of leadership in the district.

The Board reached a consensus that Ainsworth is the best leader to build upon the district’s current direction and its mission to ensure every student graduates enrolled, employed, enlisted, and engaged.

“I am deeply honored and humbled to be named the sole finalist for a school system that is not just my professional home, but a community I care for deeply,” Ainsworth said. “I am committed to continuing our pursuit of premier experiences and ensuring that Carroll County remains a place where we positively change the lives of our students and staff every single day.”

A Proven Leader for Carroll County

Ainsworth currently serves as the Associate Superintendent of School Performance for Carroll County Schools, where she works in direct partnership with Superintendent Cowart to lead the district’s operational and educational needs. During her tenure, she has:

Managed significant growth: Supported the oversight of the district budgets totaling over $242 million and directly led more than $50 million in local, state, and federal funding initiatives.

Driven academic excellence: Coordinated system processes that resulted in a 97 percent district-wide graduation rate and spearheaded strategic academic initiatives to accelerate student achievement.

Expanded Student Opportunities: Launched programs, such as Go West Early, to increase high school students' access to college-level experiences, and championed the successful effort for 100 percent of Carroll County Schools campuses to achieve National STEM Certification.

Board Chairman Kerry Miller praised Ainsworth’s readiness for the role.

“Dr. Ainsworth is a brilliant educator who understands the complexity of our system,” Miller said. “Her commitment to excellence, equity, and our 24STRONG culture positions her to lead us forward so every child in our five clusters is empowered to thrive.”

Extensive Experience and Recognition

Ainsworth’s 23 years of experience began as a special education teacher at Villa Rica High School, and includes service as an assistant principal, principal, and Director of Assessment in the Douglas County School System. She returned to Carroll County in June of 2019 to serve as Assistant Superintendent of School Performance. She was elevated to associate superintendent in May 2024.

Ainsworth is a highly decorated administrator, notably as the 2015 National Assistant Principal of the Year, an honor given by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Most recently she led Carroll County Schools’ efforts to earn the Cognia System of Distinction award in 2025. Carroll County was one of only 11 systems in the world so honored last year.

Ainsworth holds a bachelor’s degree from Georgia State University, a master’s degree from the University of West Georgia, a specialist degree from Jacksonville State University, and two certificates in leadership and a Doctor of Education degree in School Improvement, also from UWG. She is active in the community, serving on the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce Executive Committee and the University of West Georgia Alumni Board and is a past president of Carrollton Dawnbreakers Rotary Club.

Next Steps

By Georgia law, the board must wait at least 14 days following the announcement of a finalist before taking a final vote to officially appoint the new superintendent. The Board plans to hold this final vote at a future scheduled meeting, with the new superintendent expected to begin work following Cowart’s retirement in June 2026.

Carroll County Schools is a premier school system serving over 16,300 students across 23 schools and five clusters: Bowdon, Central, Mt. Zion, Temple, and Villa Rica. The district is recognized nationally for its STEM certification and commitment to future-focused learning.
