Earlier this week, the Fairburn Police and Fire Departments' certified car seat technicians conducted a child car seat safety inspection. In collaboration with the Harvest Rain Early Learning Academy, the event was designed to educate families on installing and assuring their car seats have been installed properly and used correctly.

Our technicians inspected car seats, ensuring our community's youngest passengers are riding as safely as possible. Parents left with peace of mind and some helpful tips. A huge thank you to Harvest Rain Early Learning Academy for allowing us to host the event.

Together, we're making every ride a safer one. 🚗👶

This week has been a solemn week for the Fairburn Police Department with the loss of yet another brother. But today, we join the many law enforcement agencies across the nation in honoring Peace Officers Memorial Day and recognizing National Police Week.

Peace Officers Memorial Day is observed on May 15th each year to honor all peace officers who have died or been disabled in the line of duty. This day serves a reminder to the courage and sacrifices made by law enforcement officers.

We proudly honor and remember our fallen Fairburn brothers:

- Detective Marquise Grant, E.O.W. November 5, 2021

- Lieutenant Jean-Harold Astree, E.O.W. July 28, 2022

- Sergeant Mark Smith, E.O.W. May 11, 2026

Their service, dedication, and sacrifice will never be forgotten. We ask everyone to join us in remembering the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice and to keep their families, friends, and fellow officers in your thoughts and prayers.

The Fairburn Police Department is deeply saddened to share the passing of Sergeant Mark Smith.

Sgt. Smith, age 49, passed away today, May 11th, 2026, in Fairburn. He served with the City of Fairburn since November 2018 and was a valued and respected member of the Fairburn Police Department.

Throughout his time with the department, Sgt. Smith faithfully supported the residents and businesses of Fairburn with pride, professionalism, and dedication. He was loved by many who had the privilege of working alongside him and was also a member of the department's Peer Support Team, where he helped support and care for his fellow officers. In addition to his service to Fairburn, Sgt. Smith proudly served our country as a United States Air Force veteran.

"Our officers appreciate all the support from the City of Fairburn and the community during this painful time," said Chief of Police Anthony Bazydlo. "We extend our deepest condolences and heartfelt prayers to Sgt. Smith's family, friends, and fellow officers."

The Fairburn Police Department asks the community to keep Sgt. Smith's family, loved ones, fellow officers, and all who knew him in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. A temporary memorial has been set up in front of the Police Department. Additional information regarding services or opportunities to honor Sgt. Smith will be shared as it becomes available.

Fairburn Police have been busy this April. As we close the month, we want to send a BIG Congratulations to Sergeant S Lanford on recently graduating from Georgia’s Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) program.

This rigorous 160-hour program is designed to keep Georgians safe by removing impaired drivers from the roadways. Law enforcement officers who successfully participate in the program become proficient at identifying drugs and drug categories as well as detecting the signs that impaired drivers display when under the influence of drugs.

Sergeant Lanford has been employed with the department since 2017 and is currently a member of FPD’s Traffic Unit. He is the FIRST known Fairburn officer to successfully pass the program and become DRE Certified.

Thank you Sergeant Lanford for your commitment to keeping Fairburn’s roadways safe from impaired driving and congratulations on an outstanding achievement.

Introducing our newest K-9, Buster!

Buster is Fairburn Police Department’s first Electronic Storage Detection (ESD) K9. Buster was donated by Defenders for Children, a nonprofit dedicated to preventing child abuse, trafficking, and child po*******hy. Part of the organization’s effort is pairing law enforcement agencies with electronic detection dogs like Buster, a 2-year-old Golden Retriever.

Working alongside his handler, Detective Sean VanLoo, Buster will help investigators locate hidden electronic devices faster, more efficiently and with precision that may uncover critical evidence. He is also trained to provide emotional support to investigators during difficult investigations, therapeutic comfort to victims and families navigating traumatic scenes, and to help deliver online safety education in the community.

We are excited to welcome Buster to the Fairburn Police Department and Fairburn community. A huge thanks to Defenders for Children for making this happen!

During our time at the GACP conference, we were able to connect with Misty from Adventure Bags, Inc.

During our time together, Misty advised that she would gladly donate 24 adventure bags to the Fairburn Police Department for children in crisis. The bags are for boys and girls ages ranging from infants to teenagers. They are packed with supplies that will help comfort and support them in times of crisis.

We would like to thank all of you from Adventure Bags for your commitment to the citizens of Fairburn.
