Fighting Climate Change with Urban Forests
February 20, 2019 (Thursday)
9:00 am - 4:00 pm
Trees Atlanta - Kendeda Center
225 Chester Ave, Atlanta GA 30316
Featured Speakers:
Dr. David Nowak, Senior Scientist at the USDA Forest Service, is one of the founding developers of their free software program i-Tree. As a result of the many research studies he has authored, Nowak's data indicates we have lost 36 million trees annually from urban and rural communities over a recent five-year period.
Dr. Aruni Bhatnagar, Director at the Christina Lee Brown Envirome Institute and professor and researcher at the University of Louisville, is leading groundbreaking research as part of the Green Heart Project. The study involves planting 8,000 trees, and is the first controlled experiment to test urban greening in the same way a new pharmaceutical intervention would be tested.
Dan Lambe, President of the Arbor Day Foundation, will close the day with very timely comments on the urgency of our shared mission. The Arbor Day Foundation is a nonprofit that inspires people to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees, and they’ve recently committed to plant 100 million trees across the globe by 2022.
In addition, conference presentations from science, policy, and community experts will include:
Commissioner John Dargle, City of Atlanta, Department of Parks and Recreation
Christina H. Fuller, Georgia State University School of Public Health
Lee Harrop, Westside Future Fund
Commissioner Tim Keane, City of Atlanta, Department of City Planning
Audrey Leous, Central Atlanta Progress
Evan Mallen, Georgia Institute of Technology
Arie Manangan, Center for Disease Control
Brionté McCorkle, Georgia Conservation Voters
Susan Rutherford, City of Atlanta, Department of Watershed

Evidence continues to mount for the abundant benefits of trees for the environment, human health, and well-being, yet trees are increasingly at risk for destruction in our city.
This year's Canopy Conference will address the case for more trees in cities. We'll discuss how city leaders and individuals can leverage the power of trees on our city streets and neighborhoods to lessen the damages caused by global climate change. Because the impacts are felt locally, we believe urgent local actions are needed for immediate local outcomes.
The City of Atlanta is forecasted to more than double in population by 2050. The same trend is predicted for the entire metro Atlanta region. As more people move into urban areas, demands on Atlanta's infrastructure grows. Investing in the natural infrastructure of trees needs to be a priority for Atlanta. With intentional policy and action, our City in the Forest can be the world-class model for fighting climate change with urban forests.
Join us for this important conversation.
